Interesting article. The cast did a fantastic job at hiding the fact there were trenches here and there. I never caught anyone looking suspiciously about them. And the behind the scenes angst never made it to the on screen performances.

Paul Fusco (Co-creator, ALF): Jim Henson was a big fan of ALF and wanted him to do a Muppet Show—the John Denver Christmas Special. He wanted to do something with Kermit and Miss Piggy. It would’ve given me an opportunity to perform with Jim and Frank Oz, but I turned it down because I didn’t want ALF to be perceived as a Muppet.
Lisa Bannick (supervising producer): Paul hated Muppets. ALF was a little raggedy, and his worst fear was people thinking he was part of Fraggle Rock. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well that makes me have some disrespect for Paul Fusco. In the quote above he claims enough respect for Jim and Frank, but then Lisa says Paul "hated" Muppets; that's very strong (I hope she exaggerated). And his worst fear was people thinking he was part of Fraggle Rock? FR is a brilliant show and the best 30-minute children's show ever created, produced, and performed, IMO. He should be honored to ever be mistaken as a part of that show. I do understand ALF is different and is adult with an edge to him, but it just rubbed me the wrong way reading those quotes above, especially Lisa's immediately after Paul's. |
