I'm talking about a scene in a show that breaks the rules established in future episodes, or even rules established later in the same episode.

Happy Days - In Season 1, one of the kids was named Chuck. Then suddenly Chuck never existed.

In the One Day at a Time pilot, Schneider is living downstairs with his (unseen) wife. After that, it's established he had been married for a week and divorced sometime in the past.

Golden Girls was bad about lack of continutity, especially concerning the number of children each of the women and some other details.

MASH was another show that changed things about their characters, Potter was originally from Nebraska, and. Presperterian (sic) and then he was a Methodist (which is correct and easier to spell). Hawkeye had a living mother and a sister, then he became an only child. Radar at first smoked cigars and drank liquor on occasion (basically snitching from Blake), but when Potter came around, Radar was more childlike and innocent. MASH also had a lot of anachronisms, which was something from the future was inadvertently set in the TV timeline.

In All in the Family, George got the money for the dry cleaners from an insurance check from an injury. In The Jeffersons, they bought their first store in 1968.

Golden Girls and MASH were the biggest offenders, dunno about others.

Lots of shows do this.

Designing Women: For most of the series run Charlene mentioned having sisters named Marlene, Harlene and Darlene, but never mentioned a sister named Carlene. Carlene becomes a major character in later seasons and never mentions Marlene, Harlene or Darlene.

It also seems that the age difference between Julia and Suzanne was changed at some point, to make them closer in age.

"Facts of Life"--On the "Adoption" episode, we learn that Natalie is a Virgo. In a later episode, Natalie claims that she's a Taurus.

about Radar from MASH-those changes happened because after the first season Gary Burghoff suggested they give the character little traits like not smoking, not drinking etc. to make him funnier

TV shows sometimes change little things like that after the pilot.

I can think of a couple off the top of my head. But it happens all the time.

Frasier. In an early episode of Frasier, Frasier and Niles have a fight over something silly (as usual) and end up not speaking to each other. And finally Martin's had enough of the two of them. He gives them a lecture and says he never had a brother but if he did he'd never act the way towards him that Frasier and Niles do with each other. It's basically made to sound like Martin is an only child. Then suddenly in a later season Martin has a brother in one episode married to a Greek woman, played by guest star Patty LuPone. They have a son who's getting married and the Greek aunt is very concerned Frasier will say something to his cousin to mess things up. After that one episode, Martin's brother, the wife, and their son are never mentioned again. Like they don't exist.

The King Of Queens. In the first couple of episodes Carrie has a sister and then suddenly she's gone never to be heard from or seen again. And it's later established that Carrie is now an only child.
