5. BATMAN

Call it what you will – retro, outdated, Adam West in tights – but whatever you call it, the truth remains the original 1960s Batman set the groundwork for the caped crusader we know today. When Bob Kane and Bill Finger first introduced their creation to the world, Batman was fighting foes in damp alleyways and dark comic book panels. While the versions of Bruce Wayne’s bat persona we know today have since adopted the same brooding disposition the creators intended, the character was once a kid-friendly fixture of the DC Comics universe. Alongside his Boy Wonder sidekick Robin (Burt Ward), the dynamic duo fought the evil-doers in a city of vibrant colors that popped off the pages. It was this iteration of the character that West brought to the screen and he has never gotten the love he deserves for bringing the hero all that extra attention.

With big names like Frank Miller and Christopher Nolan adding their contributions to the cynical version of the Dark Knight, it’s easy to label the 1960s series as purely campy, but little is actually known of the series and its awesome place among other notable versions of Batman. In 1966, the show would receive an Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Series for its tongue-in-cheek humor. It wasn’t by chance that West and his co-star Burt Ward delivered lines like “To the batpole!” with an exaggerated sense of excitement. Over the top, self-parodying comedy was what the creators intended and it blended well with the low production costs and brightly colored uniforms. Examples of zany scenes included West’s comical take on the then-popular dance the Watusi (later coined the “Batusi” by fans) as well as Batman and Robin being served subpoenas after being sued by The Riddler for false arrest. The 60s were a different time and Gotham called for a different kind of hero. Whether the series is perceived as a disgrace by Dark Knight loyalists or not, there’s no denying the series’ impact on comic book sales. Batman soared to new heights because of the show, later giving rise to Keaton, Bale and Batfleck. We think that calls for a little gratitude.

25. Powers - never heard of it, strangely in the story they make it sound like a terrible adaptation - yet it somehow earns a place in a "best of" list ?

24. Lois and Clark - it might seem dated now, but they were pretty faithful to Superman lore and it was a pretty god show overall

23. Lucifer - never read the comic, unfamiliar with it, I watched the first ep of the show but didn't get into it

22. Wonder Woman - Lynda Carter was awesome as WW and back in the day this show was a big hit, a can't miss for all us kids

21. The Flash (90's version) - I have never actually seen this one - should probably check it out if its on Netflix or Hulu

20. Constantine - never read the comic, but the show was great

19. Legends of Tomorrow - never seen the comic, the show is OK but I think it drags too much and is probably too high on this list

18. Outcast - never heard of it, don't have Cinemax

17. Smallville - I really loved this series, it as really well done.

16. Supergirl - the show is OK, I think it is too new to really judge it appropriately

15. The Middleman - never heard of it

14. Gotham - people either love or hate this show, I love it and think it should probably be higher on this list

13. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - I used to read the old Iron Man comics as a kid so I was familiar with the source, but no interest in the current series

12. The Incredible Hulk - watched it as a kid, it was a good show but proba ly too high on this list

11. Agent Carter - never seen it

10. Tales From The Crypt - I remember some of the show, but I don't think it was top ten material for this list

9. iZombie - I just couldn't get into this show, it certainly isn't better than half the shows on this list

8. Arrow - I was a huge Green Arrow fan as a kid and this show really delivered as promised - although the last season was a disappointment

7. The Tick - another ne I watched as a kid and had all the comics, it was good but not #7 good

6. Preacher - not familiar with the comic, tried to watch the show but it was too generic and boring

5. Batman - this show was iconic; even if the campy Batman of the 60's isn't your favorite version of the character, it was still an endlessly entertaining show

4. Daredevil - haven't seen this version, probably couldn't watch it out of fear that it cause nightmarish flashbacks of Ben Affleck

3. The Flash - I loved the Flash comics as a kid and this show is great, it belongs very high on the list

2. Jessica Jones - never seen it more than just previews, seems like a bunch of hype don't think it can deliver

1. The Walking Dead - didn't realize this was a comic, thought it was just another Zombie-fad thing, whatever its not really my thing - when I think of comics I think of HEROES

where was the 70's version of Spiderman? Shazzam? Superboy?
