very shocked and saddened by this news - he was still very active and involved in a lot of ongoing productions, I didn't even realize he had any health issues.
Garry Marshall - thank you for all the great entertainment you gave us over the years.

I had the opportunity to meet Garry Marshall when he spoke at the American Booksellers Association show at Navy Pier in Chicago. He was very funny and I got his book Wake me When It's Funny autographed. To me, Happy Days was his best show. He drew the names of the characters from personal experiences. Richie Cunningham came from the name of a boy he remembered from growing up in the Bronx, Chachi Arcola came from Arcola Street and Pinky Tuscadero came from an experience when Marshall's car broke down in Atascadero, CA. He dropped the first 'A' and changed the second "a" to a "u'.
