An Insider's Guide to the Star Trek Movies:
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Remake of "The Changeling" episode from the original series with too much budget and very little added to the original story.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Continuation of "Speed Seed" episode from the original series with elements borrowed from classics like "Moby Dick", "A Tale of Two Cities" and Horatio Hornblower stories.
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - Because of the open ending of ST2, this movie had to be made. In order to include Leonard Nimoy into the movie (and payroll), as he was previously tired of playing Spock, the directorial assignment went to Nimoy.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - Having exhausted so many repeated themes and wanting to attract new fans, this continuation of the Star Trek trilogy included many comedic elements that were missing in previous movies. The time traveling to "current" day San Francisco makes the movie more relatable to a general audience. Also, this movie was released about a year before Star Trek: The Next Generation which might have helped hyping up the new TV show by generating interests among new (young) fans.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - When the contracts for actors William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were made for the Star Trek movies, someone had the bright idea to include all the same clauses for both actors. Meaning whatever one does, the other also gets to do. Well, this was a directorial debut for William Shatner and it lacked the success of ST3 and ST4 which Nimoy was involved in. Also, Paramount grew cold feet during the production and cut budget to the movie so they could make a profit (instead of spending too much and lose money). Also, the script was written for specific actors instead of characters who would make the story more interesting. The role of Spock's brother was turned down by Sean Connery. Instead of rewriting the script to better fit a new actor, they hired someone to play Sean Connery playing Spock's brother (like RDJ's character in Tropic Thunder). This was a complete failure and setback Star Trek movies from it's peak. But meanwhile, TNG was doing well so Paramount didn't care as much, they only see Star Trek as a cash cow by this time.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - Some called it "Star Trek: The Apology" since it was made to redeem the mistake that was ST5. The movie was well made but cannot be compared to the Trilogy. By this time, the TNG fan base was in place and forcing elements into the movies that are tied to "future history" took some wind out of the sail. But overall, it is a great "farewell picture" for fans of the old series.
Star Trek: Generations - This was a sort of passing of the torch from TOS to TNG. Looks and feels like one long TNG episode and yet far inferior to the series finale "All Good Things...".
Star Trek: First Contact - Borgs, Phoenix, Cochrane.... script was written to service the fans, tying the TNG fans favorite villains with some Star Trek "historical figures".
Star Trek: Insurrection - Or as Mel Brooks called it... The Quest for More Money.
Star Trek: Nemesis - The Quest for More Money II. So bad it killed Star Trek movies for a good number of years.
Star Trek - Reboot of the old series because no one in any of the new series were likable.
Star Trek: Into Darkness - The Quest for More Money III. Let's bring another fans' favorite villain back into the movie for no good reason at all.
Star Trek Beyond - Fast and Furious in Space.
