Louis C.K. Finally Explains Why He Isn’t Doing ‘Louie’ Anymore

Fans of comedian Louis C.K.’s hit FX show, Louie have yet another reason to be down in the dumps today. The series, which has been on an indefinite hiatus since last May, hasn’t shown any signs of returning with the writer, director and actor’s short-lived Horace and Pete taking up most of the past year. When Louie‘s absence came up in an interview in April, the comic admitted he wasn’t feeling it anymore. Now it seems C.K. is no longer interested in the semi-biographical project because, as he told the Hollywood Reporter, he doesn’t have any more stories to tell for that particular character.

“I think the guy that I played on the show — the just-divorced kinda under-water dad/struggling New York comic — I don’t think I have stories for that guy anymore,” C.K. explained. “I have always thought […] that it may come back with a different set of stories from a different angle a little further down the road. And I don’t know where that’s from yet, so it just depends on if it writes.”

In other words, because Louie is what C.K. calls “autobiographical,” his writing for it often reflects what is going on in his own life, or has happened in the past. Which is obvious, since so much of Louie — being divorced, having two daughters, working as a stand-up comic in New York City — directly reflects much of its creator’s recent life. With Horace and Pete and other projects (like Zach Galifianakis’s FX show, Baskets), C.K.’s life has been changing, so it no longer matches what he was doing with Louie.

C.K. stressed that he didn’t “ever want to do the show because I owe another season.” Instead, he’d rather write more Louie because there was another story to tell about its title, somewhat biographical character.
