Movie New Line is Working on a "Three's Company" Feature Film

Three's Company Movie in the Works with He's Just Not That Into You Writers (Exclusive)
4/20/16
by Borys Kit

New Line wants you to come and knock on its door.

The studio is in negotiations to pick up the rights to the classic television series "Three’s Company", and is tapping scribes Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, the duo behind its 2009 hit He’s Just Not That Into You, to pen the screenplay.

Robert Cort, the veteran producer whose credits range from Tom Cruise's 1980s' Cocktail to Julia Roberts' Runaway Bride, is attached to produce.

In today's politically correct society I don't know how it can turn out good, a guy pretending to be gay and living with two single women isn't as taboo as in the 70's.

On the other hand if they go full hardcore R-rated raunchiness then I will definitely not see this crap.

Yes, I think it is a bad idea. Three's Company is a time capsule in a lot of ways and should be enjoyed as such. To remake it in 2016 presents a lot of problems which would require rehauling the entire premise of the show. And the writers hired to write the movie are only known for the usual rom-com fare, so I am not filled with confidence.

If they could walk the line The Brady Bunch movie did, showing respect for the source material, yet at the same time mocking the things about it people had made fun of over the years, I'd watch it.

^Same here. But I don't know for sure if I'd watch it. I might or I might not.

I think if it had any chance of working, the reboot would also have to be set in the mid-70s. Different gender roommates are no longer taboo (not that they even were in the mid 70s) and the "play gay" for shock value maneuver wouldn't work today. However, if they could do a decent reboot, I'd love to see John's son, Jason Ritter, play Jack Tripper. Jason looks like his dad, and he's hilariously funny on "Another Period" and "Garfunkel & Oates".

Remember that film reboot of Starsky & Hutch (which, like Three's Company, aired on ABC Network) that was released in 2004? The Starsky & Hutch film was set in 1975 – the year of the original show's debut – but it was so riddled with anachronisms; for example, the present-day Los Angeles skyline (with the Library Tower, which opened in 1990) was shown in the background during one of the film's scenes. More of these anachronisms can be found on the film's goofs page on IMDB.

Why set any film reboot in the year of the original show's debut, anyway? Columbia/Sony released a film reboot of Bewitched (another ABC series) in 2005, but the film wasn't set in 1964. I think any feature-film reboot of Three's Company would be a failure at the box office.

Another fact: Even though the Starsky & Hutch series is owned by Sony Pictures Television, the Starsky & Hutch film reboot was released by Warner Bros..

"Stay Safe"? More like "Stay Sad".

A show like Three's Company as it was simply would be hard to make work because the premise is so dated. The idea of landlords getting so involved in their tenants' sex lives that they would set rules about when they're allowed to have a member of the opposite sex in their apartment -- or that their issues with having single men and women living together would go away if the guy were gay -- would be a tough sell to the audience.

The only option to go is doing it the same way The Brady Bunch movies were handled, with the subtle in-jokes and meta humor.
