Default MTV’s Spring Break turns 30

http://www.gq.com/story/mtv-spring-break-vj-alan-hunter

Original MTV VJ Alan Hunter says of helming Spring Break coverage: "By 1986, we knew that MTV was a powerhouse, and pretty much whatever we aimed our cameras at was going to draw some attention thereafter. So we knew that if we went down to Daytona and had fun for a week, it was gonna be crazy and probably crazier than it was before. We went down there with the intention of filming every bit of the craziness, and me at the forefront with the microphone—usually with cans of beer being emptied on my head. I loved the chaos."

I hated Spring Break. I'd rather watch music videos.

I enjoyed the Spring Break programming. They had concerts, competitions, and a lip sync contest. But today you couldn't do an event like that due to social media. Imagine the outrage on Twitter and Facebook.

It's hard to believe it's been so long ago but it's been so long that those who were on Spring Break then (and filmed)could have kids also on Spring Break. If I recall this was around the time MTV was playing more shows instead of videos.

I also miss MTV's annual Summer beach house programming. When MTV stopped doing that (I don't know if it was a cost cutting measure or what), that was one of the big factors of MTV no longer being on the cutting edge on whatever was considered cool/on-point w/ youth culture.

Why watch the Summer Beach House when you can watch Teen Mom?

Their mad grab for ratings was their own undoing. They very narrowly focused on only an audience that watches reality shows and those who only listen to pop. So the audience that listened to other genres went away, and later found their home on the internet.

Focusing less on music and more on just general ratings kind of left them directionless. The channel use to push the envelope and carve the path for new things. They abandoned that path and paid the price.
