I remember watching a number of Joker's Wild episodes with Bill Cullen taking over for the late Jack Barry. It seemed that age was starting to get to Bill and I agree that the format wasn't the right fit for Bill's pace. To me, Dan Enright made a big mistake of not hiring Jim Peck to replace Barry and going with Bill Cullen instead. The show limped along for two more seasons and it could have been more if Peck was the new host.

I skimmed about half of the video. How come all the combinations are from shows that air overseas?

All I know is John Bauman wasn't fit to share the stage with Gene Rayburn.

Pardon me for bumping up this thread, but I agree that Jim Peck would have been a better successor. In hindsight, the selection of Bill Cullen seemed like an afterthought, as Hot Potato had just been canceled and he was still under contract with Barry & Enright Productions. The Joker's Wild was clearly not a good fit for Cullen, due to the show's pace, which was different from what he was accustomed to. Overall, Bill Cullen was a great game show host; he just wasn't a good replacement host.
In David Baber's book Television Game Show Hosts, Jim Peck claimed that Colbert Television Sales, syndicator of TJW, feared that he didn't have a big enough name to host the show. Also in the book, Peck acknowledged that Bill Cullen worked slowly, which was a contrast to him and Jack Barry. Nevertheless, he spoke of Cullen as "a delightful guy." |
