Planned Parenthood released a statement immediately following last night’s shocking midseason finale applauding Shonda Rhimes. Meanwhile, the conservative Media Research Council responded with disgust, saying: “Hollywood’s liberal values permeate movies and television. Last night’s episode of ABC’s Scandal was pretty much an hour-long advertisement for Planned Parenthood.” PLUS: Why this storyline took the abortion debate a step further than most shows, and this was the second time Scandal broached the controversial abortion debate. |

As Sarah Kliff points out, Thursday’s scene was "surprising in two ways. First, it was an on-air depiction of the actual abortion procedure — something that's never been shown onscreen on a network (read: non-cable) primetime series…Second, and a bit more subtly, Scandal provides a different reason for having an abortion.” PLUS: Shonda Rhimes expertly calculated that abortion scene, Tony Goldwyn says, "That abortion blew my mind,” and it portrayed as an intimate event portrayed without judgment. |
