Default MacGyver Reboot In Works At CBS with Furious 7 director

Quote:
“MacGyver” is back on the case at CBS.

The Eye is developing a new spin on its 1980s action-adventure series from “NCIS: Los Angeles” exec producer R. Scott Gemmill and director James Wan, helmer of such pics as “Saw” and “Furious 7.” Gemmill and Wan are exec producing with Henry Winkler, who produced the original series, and Michael Clear for CBS TV Studios.

The new version would follow MacGyver in his early years, as a 20-something new recruit to a clandestine organization where he hones his skills at averting disaster.

CBS is high on Gemmill and Wan’s take on the reboot, which is a big priority for the network and studio this development cycle. Gemmill will continue to serve as an EP on “NCIS: Los Angeles” this season.

The original Paramount TV series starred Richard Dean Anderson as a covert operative known for his “Flash Gordon”-like ability to wriggle out of a jam at the last second. It ran from 1985-92 and has endured as a pop culture touchstone — so much so that “to MacGyver” something has become a slang verb.

Wan had been attached to direct a feature rendition of “MacGyver” that has been in development at New Line. The WB Network also took a stab at developing a “Young MacGyver” series in 2003 but it never came to fruition.

It could work. Seeing MacGyver starting out is interesting.

IINM, CBS Studios is the current name of the production outlet who was behind the original 1985-92 ABC MacGyver-- namely Paramount Television (Henry Winkler/John Rich Productions being in association with them).

The most memorable thing like all other 1980's shows was its kick ass theme song.

CBS Orders Pilot for "MacGyver" Reboot
by Will Robinson
2/2/16

"MacGyver" might be headed back to TV. CBS has ordered a pilot modernizing the resourceful agent, to be directed by Furious 7 helmer James Wan, EW has learned.

Written and executive produced by Paul Downs Colaizzo, the re-imagining will center on a 20-something MacGyver who is recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters.

Michael Clear and Henry Winkler will executive produce.

I saw the first ever preview of the MacGyver reboot on CBS while watching Let's Make A Deal today and I think if it's gonna be great CBS might have a winner on their hands when the MacGyver reboot debuts this fall. My mother was a fan of the original MacGyver when it debuted on ABC and when I told my mom that MacGyver was being rebooted she was surprised to know about it. The other info I learned about the MacGyver reboot on CBS is that it's gonna be on Friday nights this fall. Wonder if CBS will move Blue Bloods or Hawaii Five-O to different days when CBS debuts the MacGyver reboot as well?

Macgyver is coming on at 8:00. Hawaii Five-O stays at 9 and Blue Bloods stays at 10.

I'm not too impressed with it, HOW COULD THEY EXCLUDE PETER THORNTON FROM THE REBOOT? AND THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION?

It's lame if you ask me because it's missing stuff like that from the original.

Angus MacGyver is back and this time he’s in one shoddy, bland procedural drama that you could easily mistake for half the shows that CBS airs.

I finally got around to watching the pilot episode for the new MacGyver and thought it was really, really lousy. It reminded me why I don’t bother watching network television anymore and how incredibly dull and uninteresting their shows have become. At least to me. I’m sure their are plenty of their shows that attract fans, but man do they all look so generic and interchangeable to me.

Probably the best place to watch any ‘television’ shows is on cable or through streaming services. That’s where I hear much more excitement by audiences lies and where most of the television awards go to. If you want safe, banal, uninteresting programming – go to the networks.
