TV HBO Officially Renews "Girls" for 6th and Final Season

Lena Dunham Says "Girls" will Probably End after Season 6
by Danielle Zhu
9/29/15

Lena Dunham called in to Elvis Duran and the Morning Show on Tuesday, where she chatted about her Lenny Letter project, Star Wars, and the end of her HBO show, "Girls".

Dunham suggested that the timing feels right for season 6 to be the conclusion of the series.

Never say never, but that is the way that we’re thinking about it right now and we’re starting to think about sort of how to wrap up the storylines of these particular young women,” Dunham said.

I started working on this show when I was 23, and now I’m going to be 30 so it kind of feels right that this show kind of sandwiched my 20s and then I go off into the world!

The "Girls" creator also chatted about costar Adam Driver, who will be playing the villain in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Dunham admitted that she has never seen any of the Star Wars films, but will only do so if Driver changes his mind about "Girls".

Adam has never watched an episode of Girls because he doesn’t like to watch himself,” Dunham says. “So I’m like, ‘Great, you watch Girls, I’ll watch Star Wars!’

HBO's "Girls" To End after Season 6
by Nellie Andreeva
January 5, 2016

The end is near for HBO’s "Girls". The Lena Dunham comedy will wrap its run after getting one more renewal for a sixth and final season to air in 2017.

I hear the decision was made virtually unanimously, with HBO brass and the series producers agreeing that was the right lifespan for the series, which became an instant pop culture staple and made creator/star Dunham a household name.

The end date, set as "Girls" is about to air its fifth season, reflects Dunham’s view that "Girls" should run for six seasons, which she has shared publicly a number of times.

The series, which debuted on HBO on April 5, 2012, was never a big ratings draw but has had a major cultural impact. Season 5 premieres on February 21.

It's Official: HBO Renews "Girls" for Sixth and Final Season
January 6, 2016
by Lesley Goldberg

It's official: HBO's "Girls" is coming to its natural conclusion.

The premium cable network used its time Wednesday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour to formally announce that "Girls" has been renewed for a sixth and final season.

The news comes as little surprise after word leaked Monday that the comedy starring and created by Lena Dunham would conclude after season six in 2017.

"Lena Dunham and her brilliant collaborators, including Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner, have given HBO a signature series of rare wit and intelligence," said Lombardo.

"They are exceptional talents, and I can’t wait to see what Lena, Jenni and Judd have in store for the final seasons of this unique show, and look forward to working with them on future projects."

Lena Dunham said:

"I can’t imagine a more fulfilling creative experience than Girls. The freedom and support that HBO has given Jenni, Judd and me is something rare and beautiful. The commitment and originality of our actors has been stunning, and our crew is truly my family.

I conceived of Girls when I was 23 and now I’m nearly 30 — the show has quite perfectly spanned my 20s, the period of time that it’s about — and so it feels like the right time to wrap our story up. We look forward to creating a sixth season that will honor our amazing cast, crew and fans.

And in the Girls universe, nothing ever ends too neatly.
"

"Girls" remains a cornerstone of the premium cable network's original scripted programming and a staple of the cultural dialogue.

The series will return for its fifth season Sunday, Feb. 21.

"The problem,” says Sonia Saraiya, "has been that Girls has never had a strong sense of purpose, aside from being an important creative stepping stone for Lena Dunham. The show has never been exactly bad, in my opinion, but it has routinely felt unfinished, self-indulgent, and provocative for mere provocation’s sake.”
