It seems like the soap opera genre is dying. It doesnt help that the head writer is Charles Pratt. He's doing some lousy work on Y&R.

I hate that the soaps are on the extinction list. The world has changed so much in the past few decades, people are distracted by so many other things and life impinges on our free time. I no longer watch any soap, and I had watched Y&R since I was a little kid. I stopped watching around 2008. I've caught a few episodes here and there and have not been impressed by the writing or the story lines, which seem rehashed endlessly.

I've watched Young and the Restless for about five years and while I rarely miss a day, I find myself getting far more irritated at characters than I used to.
* I would love to see the Victor-Billy hatred scaled back. Was hoping that would happen back when Victor had amnesia and Billy helped bring him home. Was not to be. * Summer. Please, just go away. Her and Chloe, I would be fine if I never see either one of them again. * I wish they would cut the repetitive dialogue. I know that is a way for viewers to quickly catch up. Personally, I see it as a crutch for writers to not move storylines along. Want people to watch every day? Don't be so repetitive and keep plotlines moving! |

1. There are fewer women viewers at home during the day because they are out working. In fairness, it's also safe to assume that VCR's were used in the past, and now, people use DVRs. This goes into the next reason. 2. Soaps often get to formulaic and predictable. Compare and contrast what goes on in soaps outside the US: They employ a cast for a 6-9 month show. Once they end the actors go on to new soaps with a whole set of characters. It's multi-generational. Dead people stay dead (they aren't wandering around with amnesia somewhere). The arcs are interesting. Bad people do bad things, good people win in the end. The bottom-line is that when compared to a Spanish or British soap opera for example, it may be hard hooked on a US soap when it's pretty obvious that the show runners don't really care. 3. Soaps have always been simplistic and unsophisticated. They are shot on tape and look lousy. They are just too hokey for most viewers used to better, and better looking realistic story telling. It can also be hard for new viewers to jump into a soap that could be on for decades without knowing any of the characters or their backstories? Granted, it's easier nowadays to research them on the internet, but still. 4. Tastes change. Soaps were at their hugest in a time when entertainment options (before cable and reality TV and the internet/social media) were much more limited than they are now. |

In order to survive, the soaps in the US need to take their cues from soaps in Great Britain and Australia. Shows like the UK's Coronation Street and EastEnders as well as Australia's Neighbours and Home & Away remain hugely popular with the public and bring in amazing ratings. The main reason: They are shown in Prime time and not during the day when most people are at work or school. Most are half hour shows, are shot on film using outdoor locations and most do not air every single night, but rather three or perhaps four episodes per week. Coronation Street is going on sixty years of broadcasts and is an institution in the UK. If it were cancelled, there would be riots in the streets!
Of course, I don't see the networks doing this with the soaps, so they will end up going the way of the dinosaur in the not-too-distant future... |
