Sad Former NFL Player & "Monday Night Football" Broadcaster Frank Gifford 1930-2015

Link

Former football player and veteran sports journalist Frank Gifford has died in Connecticut, his family announced on Sunday. He was 84.

In a statement, his family said:

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and friend, Frank Gifford. Frank died suddenly this beautiful Sunday morning of natural causes at his Connecticut home. We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers.

Gifford played with the New York Giants his entire NFL career, from 1952 to 1964, with several visits to the Pro-Bowl. In 1956 he was league MVP and lead the team to a championship (before it was called "The Super Bowl").

After his playing career ended, he became a sports commentator, first for CBS and then as a co-host of Monday Night Football from 1971 to 1985.

So sad to hear of Frank's passing, and thoughts go out to Kathie Lee and his children as well...

It's hard to believe 30 years have passed since he was doing Monday Night Football. His phrase "so many times..." still echoes.

Frank Gifford's Brain Donated to Science for NFL-Concussion Research
by Michael O'Connell
11/25/15

As the dialogue around the link between football-related concussions and brain illness again increases, one famous late NFL star has been revealed to have been suffering from the condition known to have affected many league players.

At some point before Frank Gifford's August death, at age 84, the iconic running back and commentator was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). An statement from the Gifford family was issued by NBC News, the employer of widow Kathie Lee Gifford, on Wednesday — also announcing that Gifford's brain is being donated for medical research.

"During the last years of his life Frank dedicated himself to understanding the recent revelations concerning the connection between repetitive head trauma and its associated cognitive and behavioral symptoms — which he experienced firsthand," reads the statement.

"The Gifford family will continue to support the National Football League and its recent on-field rule changes and procedures to make the game Frank loved so dearly — and the players he advocated so tirelessly for — as safe as possible."

I do wonder if this in hindsight, had any serious effect on his on-air work.
