Music acts that just dropped off the radar? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Now this isn't simply for one hit wonders or gimmicky acts that were always going have a short shelf life.

I'm talking about acts that might have had a few albums and then suddenly they just vanished. Meaning their new material stopped being hyped, getting regular radio play.. that sort of thing. They may still be active.. just not a talked about as they once were. Or they used to play large venues and they now play the smaller venues.

Sadly a lot of my favorites fall into this group.

James Otto
Alison Krauss & Union Station
LeAnn Rimes
Tanya Tucker
Trace Adkins
Darryl Worley
Toby Keith (He does still play the big venues, but a lot of his momentum everywhere else seems to have taken a nosedive.)
Hal Ketchum
Diamond Rio

Martina McBride. She made a Facebook post this week reacting to comments made by a country music "expert" who says that female country singers should not be promoted and played as much as male singers, because the majority of women would rather hear music from younger, more attractive male artists. I think for a lot of once-prominent women still active in the business, they are being pushed out in favor of young males who are getting a lot of play and popularity with their bro country, which focus mostly on partying and picking up girls.

The term 'fell off the radar' doesn't fit for many of my favorite country artists. They were actually shoved aside by country radio when all these newcomers arrived and they appealed to a much younger audience. Country radio suddenly decided that artists like Conway Twitty, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, etc... were no longer marketable and weren't played unless it was on a station devoted to classic country. Willie Nelson is an exception but only because he aligned himself with many of the new artists at the time and is still doing so today. Willie's career as a solo artist has been on life-support since the late 80's but by teaming with others he found a way to be heard on country radio again which is sad because the man has nothing to prove. Oddly enough, it was Willie who got fed-up with the many classic artists not being played and started the Sirius XM channel Willie's Roadhouse which is devoted to classic country. He also bought the rights to the old Showbiz country TV shows library which includes Pop! Goes the Country, The Porter Wagoner Show & The Wilburn Brothers Show. All can currently be seen on RFD-TV along with Hee Haw. Sadly, many of the artists who were shoved aside had the idea that recording new versions of their old hits might appeal to younger listeners. Unfortunately, the new versions were nowhere near as good as the originals.

Here's an example, a greatest hits collection of Kenny Rogers with all songs being newly recorded versions and most are unbearable.

I don't agree with how that man feels, but I will say that I do feel bad for him. Its obvious that very few people agree with him if anyone does at all and I've seen messages from people elsewhere online who think that he should apologize for having such an opinion. To me, that man doesn't owe anyone anything. He had the right to share his opinion and just because so many people have a different opinion compared to his doesn't mean that he should have kept his opinion to himself especially if no one else is going to keep quiet and to me, those who decide to get worked up over another person's opinion only bring more attention to it when they decide to say anything about it at all and for all we know, getting people all bent out of shape may have been that man's every intention and if it was, what that man wanted was presented to him on a silver platter, not to mention getting all bent out of shape over what another person says only adds more value to that person's two cents and in my opinion, one person's opinion isn't supposed to be worth more than another person's opinion.

P.S. Also to me, if one person is not going to apologize for how they feel about something, they shouldn't expect anyone else to. Asking someone to do what you are not willing to do yourself will only make you look like a hypocrite.

My newest favorite act sadly falls into this category and in the worst way. Northern Calloway is the name of the singer, and eight of the twelve songs from his one and only album came from his heart, mind, and soul including the first two and the final three. If the name doesn't ring a bell, anyone here who is no stranger to the early days of the Sesame Street children's TV show will know him as David. Anyway, I was born in 1982 and so I grew up with the show, but I only just recently discovered this album of his voice, and all that it has done along with everything else of him that I have found online is make me wish that I had been born sooner. Why? Sadly, Northern is another one of the many who is no longer with us. I was only seven years old when his final day happened. Anyway, to me, the album only gets better with every listen. P.S. To me, Northern was and still is the complete and total package and even though I am well aware of how sad and questionable his last few years are, his decision to stay with a children's show for so long in my opinion only showed how well intended Northern was. How can I not wish with all that I have in me that the beautiful masterpiece of a precious gentleman was still here with us?

How about Colin Hay? As the lead signer of Men at Work, he was all over the place in 1982 and 1983. Then Men at Work's management fired the rhythm section, and the one album the three remaining members, including Hay, attempted sank without a trace. Hay then bean a solo career, and he's popular on the college-indie circuit, but mainstream radio and record buyers could never be bothered with him.
