Default Reality TV's demise is hurting Viacom

http://qz.com/378483/the-demise-of-r...urting-viacom/

In a statement this week, Viacom states that it has lost a lot of money due to its investment in reality-type programming.

I hope this means other networks will finally follow suit and realize throwing money at any kind of reality and competition show is not going to be as successful as it was years ago.

Thumbs up

I now hope that Viacom will go back to what's quality TV rather than quantity TV...

Now...make MTV what it was again...a music video station!

I seriously doubt either will ever happen.
I gave up on Viacom long ago.

They only have themselves to blame for selecting profit (what was cheapest to produce) over content!

Viacom sucks anyway. I don't care if they all fold.

People like to make the excuse that because of the advent of YouTube, MTV doesn't need to show music videos anymore. To a certain extent, I do agree. The real problem w/ MTV none the less, is that they used reality programming (which despite being of low-cultural was still cheap) as popular ratings band-aid solution. In essence, MTV by the turn of the millennium, shrunk down on the concept of actual innovation.

Default Amazon Prime to dump Viacom's reality shows thanks to reality fatigue

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...ue-hits-online

Shows like Teen Mom and Mob Wives are the latest reality programming to be dropped by the streaming service. Earlier this year, Amazon declined to renew its deal for Pawn Stars and Storage Wars.

I Think people are pretty much tired of reality tv, just like they were tired of trashy talk shows in the mid to late 90's.

Reality TV could've still worked but the networks took a good gimmick like that and ran it into the ground. Again, how many reality shows have a good shelf life? Not many.

I Think the late 2010's will be the revival of reality tv very soon.

What else is there to tell? I mean there has been every type of reality show known to man. I just think people are totally sick of them.

Movie

Reality Shows are a lot older than you think. Anybody remember Candid Camera? That show made its debut in 1948! In the mid 1970s we had Real People on NBC and That's Incredible! on ABC. These shows were enjoyable to watch (The latter two were a series of "Mini Documentaries" about everyday people in extraordinary situations). There may have been a family of rednecks who staged beauty pageants for their toddlers, but that was for ONE segment, and when that segment was over that was it! Time for a commercial break, then on to the next subject. Other Reality shows I like are Cops and America's Funniest Home Videos. Neither of these shows narrowed down to ONE subject, and run that subject into the ground (Such as that show about a certain redneck family's toddler). . I even watched American Chopper for a while until I found out all the arguements were staged (As they are for a stload of other shows of this genre. When I found out I stopped watching them. Not all "Reality" Shows are bad, but when it's obvious something is "faked" that's what takes the fun out of it, not to mention when some poor subject gets exploited in the process.
