Joel McHale Joins "The X-Files" Revival
"The X-Files" Returns as Fox Event Series with Creator Chris Carter and Stars David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson
by Nellie Andreeva March 24, 2015 Mulder and Scully are back! Thirteen years after "The X-Files" ended its nine-season run on Fox and months after talks about a new TV installment started, the sci-fi hit is returning as a six-episode event series from series creator/executive producer Chris Carter, with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson set to reprise their roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Production on the event series, whose plot is not being revealed, is set to begin this summer. It is unclear if any of the famous "X-Files" alumni, including former exec producers Frank Spotnitz, Howard Gordon and Vince Gilligan, would be involved. 20th Century Fox TV and Carter’s Ten Thirteen Prods, which produced the original series, are back for the event series. “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.” Technically speaking, it’s been less than 13 years since Mulder and Scully last tackled unexplained phenomena — the TV series spawned two theatrical movies, the second of which, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, came out in 2008. "The X-Files" follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena. The show was a breakout when it premiered in 1993 and went on to become a pop culture phenom and a global hit. "The X-Files", one of the longest sci-fi series ever on TV, also became a rare genre awards darling, winning 16 Emmys during its run. “We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers,” said Fox TV Group chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman. “The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning.” "The X-Files" event series had been in the works for almost a year, with talks between 20th TV, Fox and Carter starting around the time the studio and the network successfully brought back another signature drama, "24", as an event series. In January, Newman said he was “hopeful” about the outcome from the talks, which had focused on logistical issues, looking at windows when the key "X-Files" players — Carter, Duchovny and Anderson — were all available. Separately, there has been a fan campaign to extend the X Files movie franchise with a third feature. "The X-Files" is the latest cult TV series to be resurrected as an event/limited series, joining "24", "Twin Peaks", "Heroes: Reborn" and "Arrested Development". http://deadline.com/2015/03/x-files-...er-1201397721/ |

The six-episode event series could make The X-Files a hot property again, potentially resulting in a lucrative streaming deal for all previous episodes, as Merrill Barr points out. Just last year, Fox sold streaming rights to the entire 24 canon just as 24: Live Another Day brought back interest in Jack Bauer. "A revival of *The X-Files means all of the show's previous work is valuable again," says Barr. "Old fans are going to start re-watching it, and newcomers are going to start seeking it out in order to get caught up before the premiere." The X-Files reboot will benefit from having an older-looking Mulder and Scully David Duchovny will be 55, the same age as Cigarette Smoking Man actor William B. Davis from the pilot when the reboot premieres, as Brian Phillips points out. He adds: "It was always the case that The X-Files portrayed characters who were too young to have accumulated the world-weariness and noirish depth of experience they were forever displaying. And while that was kind of beautiful in its own way, a Mulder and Scully with some lines on their faces, a Mulder and Scully who've been kicked around a little and whose memories are plausibly patinated, could be awfully compelling too." PLUS: Who cares if the reboot turns out terrible?, how "X-Files" paved the way for Breaking Bad, and 7 things that need to happen in the reboot. |

Cigarette-Smoking Man, Walter Skinner Set to Return for "X-Files" Revival
by Andy Swift April 1 2015 During an appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Tuesday, David Duchovny was asked which original characters we can look forward to seeing again, at which point the beans were spilled: “There’s Gillian and I, we’re original. Mitch Pileggi will come back, and the cigarette-smoking man — if that means anything to anyone — will be coming back.” http://tvline.com/2015/04/01/the-x-f...ng-man-return/ |

Pileggi's Walter Skinner is the only character, other than Mulder and Scully, to appear in every X-Files season and movie. |

"X-Files" Vets Glen Morgan, James Wong Returning for Fox's 6-Episode Revival
by Michael Ausiello April 28, 2015 As far as returning "X-Files" alums go, these two are almost as big as David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. (Or at the very least, The Smoking Man and Skinner.) TVLine has learned exclusively that celebrated "X-Files" writer-producers Glen Morgan and James Wong have inked deals to return for Fox’s upcoming 6-episode revival. According to sources, the longtime collaborators will write and direct one episode apiece. Morgan will also serve as an exec producer alongside series creator Chris Carter. Snagging the duo is quite a coup for Fox, and should serve as confirmation that the network is pulling out all the stops to ensure this continuation lives up to fans’ high expectations. Sadly, Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), who was a writer on the show early in his career, is not expected to be involved. http://tvline.com/2015/04/28/x-files...g-fox-revival/ |

The original plan, he says, was to revisit the franchise on the big screen every four to five years. |

"The X-Files" Revival Will Premiere in January 2016
by Josef Adalian 5/11/15 The premiere date is out there: Fox has just announced that its new six-episode revival of "The X-Files" will premiere Sunday, January 24, at 10 p.m., immediately after the network’s broadcast of the NFL championship game. The next night, Mulder and Scully will settle in for a five-week run Mondays at 8 p.m. The two-night premiere scheduling strategy is one Fox has used to great success in the past, most notably for many seasons of "24". What’s more, by airing the show in late January and February, Fox will likely be able to avoid "The X-Files" going against NBC’s "The Voice" and ABC’s "Dancing with the Stars", which are usually between cycles then. Plus, the network will be able to eliminate a month’s worth of reruns for "Gotham", which will continue to air Mondays at eight for most of next season. http://www.vulture.com/2015/05/x-fil...gn=pubexchange |

http://www.ew.com/article/05/14/x-fi...boot-mythology
"I know there are only six (episodes) so there's going to be a mixture of stand alones—what we always called monster of the week episodes—and the mythology," Duchovny tells EW. "Which is basically what this series always was, which is a mix of those things, and even in this limited version there's going to be that mix. How many mythology shows? I don't know. I imagine two or three, but I'm really just speculating—I don't know." |

"It was just so strange to see the names on the page," he says. "It had nothing to do with the script itself. It was just like, I'd been talking about this for a long time. We'd been planning it for a long time. It took a long time to get all the people in the same place and get the deal with Fox. So let's say two years we've been talking about doing it. Now it's the fun part." |

"The X-Files" Revival Casts Joel McHale as Mulder's Dubious Ally
by Kimberly Roots June 3, 2015 Joel McHale is the first guest star announced for Fox’s upcoming continuation of "The X-Files", our sister site Deadline reports. The "Community" star and "The Soup" host will play Tad O’Malley, a conservative Internet news anchor who becomes an unlikely support for Mulder. Series creator Chris Carter reportedly is a fan of McHale’s work — which also includes a dramatic turn on "Sons of Anarchy" — which led to the stint. The six-episode revival is in production now and will premiere on Sunday, Jan. 24. http://tvline.com/2015/06/03/x-files...-revival-cast/ |
