Jon Stewart Leaving "The Daily Show" Later This Year

The long time host of "The Daily Show" is leaving, Comedy Central announced today. Praising his “comedic brilliance” as being “second to none,” the cable channel said Stewart will stay as host “until later this year..

It was time for Jon Stewart to move on, as Hank Stuever points out: "If he's as smart and cognizant of the unvarnished truth as we believe him to be, then Stewart recognized that there was a whole other kind of Daily Show waiting to be made, hosted by someone else, maybe something that's not even called The Daily Show. His version of it had become comfortable; surely it is still great comfort to those who first flocked to it during 'Indecision 2000' and the Bush vs. Gore recount, or who desperately needed it in the darkest days of post-9/11 war-waging. To watch The Daily Show every single night before bed and to expect it to never, ever change or evolve, is like being a child who never outgrows Goodnight Moon. It gets old. It had to."

Comedy Central Announces Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" Replacement

Trevor Noah, who recently joined "The Daily Show" as a contributor, has been chosen as Jon Stewart's replacement, Comedy Central announced on Monday.

"Trevor Noah is an enormous talent. He has an insightful and unique point of view, and most importantly, is wickedly funny," Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless said in a statement.

"For the next host of The Daily Show, we set out to find a fresh voice who can speak to our audience with a keen take on the events of the day, and we found that in Trevor. He has a huge international following and is poised to explode here in America, and we are thrilled to have him join Comedy Central."

Added Noah: "It's an honor to follow Jon Stewart. He and the team at The Daily Show have created an incredible show whose impact is felt all over the world. In my brief time with the show they've made me feel so welcome. I'm excited to get started and work with such a fantastic group of people."

Stewart also shared his excitement. "I'm thrilled for the show and for Trevor. He's a tremendous comic and talent that we've loved working with...In fact, I may rejoin as a correspondent just to be a part of it!!!"

Noah, who only joined the Comedy Central series in December, has reportedly been on the short list since February. The South African comedian currently acts as the show's senior international correspondent, but he previously hosted his own late-night show in South Africa for two seasons.

He has also appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and was the first African stand-up comic to appear on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno".

Trevor Noah Extends Contract Through 2022, Adds "Daily Show" Year End Specials to Franchise

Comedy Central and Trevor Noah have agreed to a contract extension, keeping "The Daily Show" host/writer/exec producer on board through 2022.

“It’s really exciting to renew this contract for either five more years or until Kim Jong Un annihilates us all – whichever one comes first,” joked Noah, who, this past weekend, picked up his first Emmy. His statuette is for Best Short Form Variety Series, for The Daily Show‘s “Between the Scenes” digital exclusives.

The new pact has Noah also producing and hosting annual "The Daily Show" year-end specials, beginning this year.

“The Daily Show will no longer take for granted that humankind has made it to another December 31st and from here on out will celebrate in annual year-end specials,” the program explained this morning.

“Trevor makes us look smart on a daily basis, and for that we’re grateful,” Comedy Central president Kent Alterman said in today’s announcement, as Noah approaches the two-year anniversary of his September 28 debut.

The exec describes Noah as “super smart, very thoughtful…really funny and also he’s unflappable. He’s one of the most self-possessed people I have ever come across.”
