Default Why 1987 Was the Worst Year in Pop Culture

http://cassavafilms.com/list-of-9/ni...in-pop-culture

Quote:
Television: Along with many terrible sitcoms at their peak of popularity (Growing Pains, Webster, Who's the Boss, Mr. Belvedere - must I go on?), once-respectable shows like Moonlighting, Miami Vice, Magnum P.I., Cagney & Lacey, Family Ties, and St. Elsewhere had jumped the shark and were limping to a close. The only notable series to debut in 1987 were on the brand new Fox network (Married with Children, 21 Jump Street, Tracey Ullman... not exactly cherished today). True, Star Trek: The Next Generation first aired this year, but even Trekkies agree that its '87-'88 season sucked.

100% disagree with this article. I think it's hilarious the author mentioned the era as being Pre-Cartoon Network, as if to say what Cartoon Network airs is good or even classic.

I think it's a matter of taste because 1987 goes down as one of my favorite years of my life, even though I was only six years old. I loved the music (every artist seemed to release an album that year), loved all of the sitcoms and cartoons and loved the movies.

Most of those "terrible" sitcoms and music I enjoyed as an eleven year-old back in 1987. I was so glad to be a kid in the 80's!

Oh No

1987 wasn't the worst...I would rather nominate 1997 since TGIF jumped the shark, rock music became more pop, and many of the sitcoms then were waning.

I was 8 at the time. I remember Full House and A Different World making their debuts that fall. We never had Fox on our cable lineup until 1997, so I can't really comment on those shows.

I have to agree with 1997 jumping the shark in terms of quality sitcoms and music. I was 18 in 1997, going to college that fall and hardly watching TV because of doing tutoring at college.

I kinda liked 1987--The Monkees- 60s were back in vogue. Nick@Nite was swinging.

If anything, the last 10 years (and counting) have been the worst time for pop culture, in every category except technology.

*Sequels fatigue

*No discernable fashion trends (the 70s had Afros, the 80s had Jheri Curls, the 90s had hi-top Afros, etc.)

*The only shows worth watching is Reality TV that have absolutely no staying power. Do you ever hear anyone talking about Jersey Shore or Flavor of Love in 2015 (in fact, do you ever see them re-ran in syndication)? Yet, people still discuss Cheers and The Cosby Show all of the time which you can still see in re-runs.

*Music is anything but musical.

With only a handful of corporations owning everything (and only a handful of people hoarding the world's wealth), creativity and originality have been completely stifled.

He considers Harry And The Hendersons as one of the theatrical embarrassments, can't take the rest of anything the author says seriously.

I agree with you. i just wasn't feeling the shows, movies, music that came out. in my opinion, i think 9/11 and the after effects of that incident led to people in showbiz and the entertainment world to become less creative and varied in terms of production.

my favourite years were from the early 1980s up to 2000. after that, it just wasn't the same, anymore.

1987 was not the worst year in pop culture across the board, just TV,except for Tracey Ullman, the Pilot show for The Simpsons, and cartoons were no good that year either,so that part is true as well. With regards to the 90's,the period from the middle 90's to the end of the 90's was no good, except for The X Files.I would not say the last 10 years were the worst time for pop culture, but I would say the last 5 years were the worst time for pop culture.Around the time Justin Bieber first came on the scene, that when pop culture jumped the shark.

The 80's were the best decade for music, movies, tv shows, cartoons, NFL football and NBA basketball, toys. I grew up in the 80's as a kid and i loved that decade. This decade for entertainment has gotten worse and it's gonna continue to get worse. Even when I'm dead, entertainment will still be terrible LOL.

I was 11 years old in 1987 and I remember some movies/TV/music were still good, some of the aformentioned shows like Growing Pains, Family Ties, Webster, ALF, Who's The Boss? were junk to begin with.

I was also at that age where I'm getting over crap sitcoms but I'm still not readily sophisticated enough for adult fare like Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, Moonlighting, Cagney & Lacey.

When it came to movies there were a lot of favorites like Predator, Robocop, Beverly Hills Cop II, Eddie Murphy: Raw, Evil Dead II, Masters Of The Universe, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, Project X, *batteries Not Included, La Bamba, Fatal Attraction, Adventures In Babysitting, The Running Man, Innerspace, Hellraiser, A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Living Daylights, Spaceballs.

As a kid too that was also a sad time when toy based cartoons were being phased out for crappy Disney junk like Duck Tales.

Duck Tales was great. You want crappy cartoons, Pacman and others based on video games. Those were crap.

I wholeheartedly agree on those cartoons, the classics for me were G.I.Joe, Transformers, The Real Ghostbusters, Masters Of The Universe, M.A.S.K., Thundercats, SuperFriends.

Like I said I was 11 in '87 so as a growing boy focusing on girls the golden age of cartoons for me at least had ended now being taken over by Disney crap.
