TV Update: Jenna Coleman Confirms "Doctor Who" Exit

Is Jenna Coleman Returning for Another Season of "Doctor Who"?
Dec 26, 2014
by Tim Surette

Christmas came right on time for fans of "Doctor Who's" companion Clara.

After weeks of speculation about the future of the newest Doctor's comely assistant, actress Jenna Coleman on Christmas Day confirmed that she will be returning to the long-running sci-fi series.

After early reports stated that Coleman was leaving the series, tabloids got the drop on Coleman's return in late November, citing a change of heart for the actress.

The BBC jumped on the mystery, telling viewers that they'd have to watch Last Christmas in order to find out her fate. Coleman's decision to stay allegedly sent "Doctor Who" writers into a scramble as they had to rewrite scripts.

During the close of Thursday's "Doctor Who" holiday special Last Christmas on Thursday, Coleman told the BBC that it was "wonderful" that she would be returning for another season, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

"I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor, and I couldn't walk away with the story being unresolved... I think Clara and the Doctor finally just reached a point where they really understand each other."

She added, "The arrival of the 12th Doctor has just kind of dropped this whole bombshell and allowed the dynamic to totally change, so I think just when Clara was feeling more comfortable in the relationship, it has suddenly thrown something new up."

And the Doctor approves.

Peter Capaldi, fresh off his debut season as the 12th Doctor, said, "I'm thrilled. Jenna has just been fantastic and such a pleasure to work with."

Report: Jenna Coleman is Leaving "Doctor Who"
by Liz Raftery
Sep 16, 2015

The Doctor may be losing his companion. Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald on "Doctor Who", will depart the series before this year's Christmas Special, the U.K.'s Daily Mirror reports.

Coleman, 29, has reportedly already filmed her final scenes on the show, whose ninth series premieres on Sunday, though the BBC would not confirm her departure.

Coleman has starred on "Doctor Who" since 2012, alongside Peter Capaldi and his predecessor, Matt Smith. Writer Steven Moffat tells the BBC that Coleman had asked to be written out of the show twice and changed her mind both times. Her fate was left undecided after a cliff-hanger in the finale of Season 8.

She'll next be seen playing Queen Victoria in a drama for Britain's ITV, according to the Mirror.

Jenna Coleman Confirms her "Emotional" Upcoming "Doctor Who" Exit
by Matt Webb Mitovich
September 18, 2015

It’s official: Jenna Coleman is upgrading from Companion to Queen of England.

Days after new reports surfaced that she was leaving "Doctor Who", the actress announced to BBC Radio on Friday morning, “I have left the TARDIS…. I’ve filmed my last scenes.

Beyond describing her exit from the series she has called home since 2012 as “emotional,” Coleman was mum about the circumstances of Clara’s good-bye.

We’re not going to give any details but it will happen at some point this season,” she said. A year-and-a-half ago, she and "Doctor Who" scribe Steven Moffat “worked out a really good story arc, so hopefully people will love it.

Coleman's next gig is starring as Queen Victoria for an ITV miniseries.

She is a vivid, strong, inspirational and utterly fascinating woman in British history,” the actress noted. “I can’t wait to tell her story.
