Bill Cosby breaks silence on the media, his wife

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bill Cosby broke his silence amid a flood of rape accusations in a very brief interview with The New York Post's Page Six.

"Let me say this. I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that you have to go in with a neutral mind," Cosby told the publication's Stacy Brown, who noted that he frequently writes for African-American publications.

Cosby, 77, has stayed silent in light of the more than two dozen women who have come forward to accuse him of having drugged and raped them. The alleged incidents go as far back as the 1960s.

In the interview, Cosby also addressed how his wife, Camille Cosby, has weathered the allegations and ongoing public scrutiny.

"Love and the strength of womanhood," he said. "Let me say it again, love and the strength of womanhood. And, you could reverse it, the strength of womanhood and love."

Cosby declined to address the rape and sexual assault allegations, though. According to the report, he's been advised not to discuss the ongoing cases with the media.

Brown wrote that the comedian, speaking from his Massachusetts home, sounded "upbeat" on the phone.

The Page Six interview ended abruptly, though, when Cosby told the reporter that "they" don't want him talking to the media.

Reps for Cosby did not immediately respond to the AP's request for comment.

And still he didn't admit his guilt. When one woman accuses a celebrity of rape, it can sometimes be blown off to an opportunist who seeks to make an easy buck. Or even someone who was fired from a job and maybe Bill was the reason. But when 20 woman come forward claiming rape in the same way, you have to ask yourself. Were we duped all these years by this guy? If Bill did admit it and cry and ask for forgiveness, these woman would bleed him dry in court. It would be the same as saying. "I'M GUILTY" He would be broke. so I think it's all about protecting his money. Because he knows no one will hire him after all of this. But one day he might get a book deal out of it.

Okay, I admit it looks bad... but this is Bill Cosby here, I just can't imagine him not getting laid by a wide range of willing groupies, I just don't get the rape thing unless it was just an extra added "role play"/fantasy kink he had... like telling the chicks to play "bad girl" for him.

Twisted, maybe, but this was Hollywood, and it just seems off that Cosby didn't get his share, if not pick of aspiring chicks with talent ready and willing to get it on to advance their careers?

It's one thing when the "chicks" are playing along, but in this case they were unaware of his fantasy (if that's what it was) and did not know they were a part of it. They were not willing participants, which by definition is rape. But if it was some sort of kinky fantasy, the idea of being with an unresponsive woman who has been drugged into unconsciousness seems to border on necrophilia, which makes me wonder if we might be hearing stories about morgues and funeral homes.

Camille, who has five children with Bill, released a new statement in support of her husband on Monday.

"He is a kind man, a generous man, a funny man, and a wonderful husband, father and friend. He is the man you thought you knew.
"A different man has been portrayed in the media over the last two months. It is the portrait of a man I do not know. It is also a portrait painted by individuals and organizations whom many in the media have given a pass. There appears to be no vetting of my husband's accusers before stories are published or aired. An accusation is published, and immediately goes viral."

Today, the number of "accusers" who have come forward are close to two dozen. Just last week, supermodel Beverly Johnson wrote a chilling and detailed account of an alleged altercation with The Cosby Show alum three decades ago in which he supposedly drugged her. However, Camille goes on to compare coverage of her husband to the Rolling Stone University of Virginia rape story.

"We all followed the story of the article in Rolling Stone concerning allegations of rape at the University of Virginia. The story was heart-breaking, but ultimately appears to be proved to be untrue," she says. "Many in the media were quick to link that story to stories about my husband — until that story unwound.

"None of us will ever want to be in the position of attacking a victim," she concludes. "But the question should be asked — who is the victim?"

For the most part, Cosby has remained mum during the past two months as the scandal continued to unfold. On Friday, he appeared to break his silence when speaking to freelance journalist Stacy Brown.

“Let me say this. I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that you have to go in with a neutral mind,” Cosby, 77, was quoted as saying, neglecting to specifically address any of the rape or sexual assault allegations.

Bill was also supposedly asked how his wife was holding up under the strain.

“Love and the strength of womanhood,” he replied. “Let me say it again, love and the strength of womanhood. And, you could reverse it, the strength of womanhood and love.”

Stacy Brown appeared on Good Morning America today to discuss her brief phone call with the actor.

"He didn't sound like a person under any stress," she noted. "In fact, I'd say that he sounded upbeat."

As for Camille, Brown told GMA, "He spoke with such reverence and such appreciation that I have to believe that she's standing by him."

However, the Cosby camp is refuting how the supposed brief interview went down. A lawyer for the actor released the following statement on Monday:

"On Saturday, the New York Post published an article by Stacy Brown indicating that Bill Cosby 'broke his silence' Friday in a discussion with Mr. Brown. Various media outlets have reported on the story with the headline 'Bill Cosby Speaks Out.' Mr. Cosby and Mr. Brown did in fact have a telephone conversation. Mr. Brown identified himself as a free-lance reporter for a number of African-American media outlets, which prompted Mr. Cosby’s comment regarding the African-American media. Mr. Brown did not indicate that he was interviewing Mr. Cosby for publication, did not say that he was reporting for the New York Post, and did not tell Mr. Cosby that the conversation was being recorded. In a discussion of journalistic standards, Mr. Brown failed to adhere to the most basic standards of his profession."

So far, no comment from Brown or the Post.

It's about time Camille said something to the media because I wanted to hear what she had to say. It's sad that she supports Bill because she should be concerned about what he has done to these women. She's very naïve because she acts like she doesn't know what's going on. She has to know that when Bill isn't around her, he's thinking about dealing with other women because he's tried having sex with other women from the accusations these women have said about him. He's not a faithful man.

Camille is trying to compare this to the UVA rape case, which involved one accuser. Here there are accusations not from one woman, but from dozens. And with no apparent motive other than to raise awareness about a perpetrator and the issue of rape in general and how it impacts the victims.

You're right. Evil Zebra and Cleverfun3000 are naïve to what's going on. I'm disappointed in them that they're taking Bill's side. Of course when situations like this happen, most men are gonna think that women are lying and just trying to get paid and get some attention by the media. I don't think these women are trying to get attention because they knew if they were found out that they're lying, they could go to jail. I know these women don't wanna go to jail.
