TV Update: David Lynch to Direct Every Ep. of "Twin Peaks" Revival

The "Twin Peaks" Revival is Actually Happening
Oct 6, 2014
by Sadie Gennis

Reboot fever continues. David Lynch and Showtime are reviving "Twin Peaks" as a nine-episode limited series, Showtime announced Monday.

Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost confirmed the news, tweeting in tandem: "Dear Twitter Friends: That gum you like is going to come back in style!" #damngoodcoffee"

The series, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year, will premiere in 2016 and act as a present-day sequel to the original. While it's unknown who from the original cast will return (fingers crossed for Log Lady!), Lynch and Frost will write every episode.

Lynch will also direct each installment which, judging from the newly released promo, will feature the same delightfully creepy music.

Showtime Secures Kyle MacLachlan for "Twin Peaks" Reboot
Jan 12, 2015
by Kate Stanhope

The Television Critics Association welcomed a very special guest to the winter previews on Monday when "Twin Peaks'" very own Agent Cooper, aka Kyle MacLachlan, took the stage to announce his role on the network's upcoming reboot.

Dressed as his iconic character, MacLachlan came out carrying "a damn good cup of coffee" intended for Showtime President David Nevins.

"I'm very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks," MacLachlan told reporters. "May the forest be with you."

Following MacLachlan's exit, Nevins explained how the highly anticipated reboot of the cult series came about.

"I was kind of begging them and hoping to pass muster with David Lynch. And It felt like the only way you could do it was to have David commit to directing all of them," he said. "I think it's something they've been toying with for a long time."

A big part of convincing Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost was the show's upcoming 25th anniversary.

"There's a reference in the original series that, 'I'll see you in 25 years,'" Nevins said. "Lynch pays attention to that kind of numerology in a big way."

As a fan of the original series, Nevins said he intended to give Lynch and Frost lots of creative freedom.

"It's David's show. It's Mark's show. I will be the grateful recipient of it. I will say that they have been very specific in promising closure, and I think that's exciting," he said.

"From what I've seen, I think this is going to live up to expectations and then some."

Oh No! David Lynch Says "Complications" Might Put "Twin Peaks" Reboot in Danger
by Tim Surette
Mar 16, 2015

That "Twin Peaks" reboot that has you perfecting your cherry pie recipe might not be such a sure thing after all. Showtime and "Twin Peaks" co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost announced a third season of the cult series in October, but now Lynch says he's not fully on board.

Speaking in Australia, where Lynch has an art exhibit, the director said the "Twin Peaks" reboot isn't a sure thing yet, according to the "Twin Peaks" fan site Welcome to Twin Peaks.

When asked if "Twin Peaks" was definitely happening, Lynch said, "I don't know. There are complications."

Said "complications" are apparently contract negotiations. Lynch later went on the Australian show "The Mix" and said, "I haven't returned yet, and we're still working on the contract, but I love the world of Twin Peaks and I love those characters."

You can take this next bit of news with a grain of salt because it's Twitter hearsay, but according to a tweet from cinematographer Will McCrabb, Lynch is off the project as of Monday, which may be connected to his push for a higher percentage of the DVD sales.

"Twin Peaks" is supposed to premiere in 2016 on Showtime.

David Lynch Drops Out of "Twin Peaks" Revival
by Liz Raftery
Apr 5, 2015

Showtime is moving forward with its revival of "Twin Peaks", but creator David Lynch won't be involved with the project.

Lynch's office sent a letter to the Twin Peaks Festival confirming that he had dropped out of the reboot over a financial dispute.

"Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks. After one year and four months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done.

This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently.
"

In March, Lynch hinted that there were conflicts over the revival and said it was "up in the air."

It remains to be seen whether Kyle MacLachlan and the rest of the cast will remain on board now that Lynch has quit the project.

Default In exiting Showtime's Twin Peaks, David Lynch showed what's wrong with TV reboots

http://time.com/3772053/david-lynch-twin-peaks-leaving/

In his series of tweets Sunday, Lynch "made explicit what always seems implicit in TV show reboots: That they're designed to be cheap and quick ratings hits, and often lack creative motivation," as Daniel D'Addario points out. D'Addario adds: "Lynch didn't find the project compelling enough as a continuation of his work to try to find a way to make it work on a lower budget, or Showtime didn't find it compelling enough as anything but sensational headline to fund it more robustly, or both."

Default A Twin Peaks reboot without David Lynch could be a good thing

When it comes to Twin Peaks, a knockoff isn't necessarily a death sentence—it can be a license to take risks and get strange and creative."

David Lynch is Back for Showtime's "Twin Peaks" Revival
by Jessica Roy
May 15, 2015

David Lynch tweeted on Friday night:

"Dear Twitter Friends, the rumors are not what they seem ..... It is !!! Happening again. #TwinPeaks returns on @SHO_Network"

Then Showtime confirmed his return with:

"#TwinPeaks pre-production starts now!! Every episode will be directed by @David_Lynch! #Showtime #damngoodcoffee"

"It's happening again!! #Showtime will be serving up some #damngoodcoffee! #TwinPeaks returns with @DAVID_LYNCH & @mfrost11."

So now we know: Lynch is back in for "Twin Peaks", and he will direct every episode. Whew!

Last month, the director shocked fans by dropping out of the revival, reportedly over money issues. He had hinted at the development on Twitter in March.

Even after he left the project, it was never in question whether or not "Twin Peaks" would come back -- it was just a matter of who would direct. The cast even made a video begging for his return. And it seems like it worked!

This development is great news -- fans were certainly worried about what a Lynch-less Peaks would look like. Now, thankfully, they don't have to.
