Stupid people only watched it for the cheerleaders.

I like football, but the XFL never interested me enough to watch it even once. Football is nice but there's only so much the average person can take. NBC recently announced that they will be airing arena football games. I predict similar failure for that as the XFL failed.

Arena Football will not fail, it has been around 15 or 16 years and will only get stronger as more people are exposed to it. It's exciting and completely different then any regular football game you will ever see, the 50 yard indoor war! Had the XFL landed some big name players it could have had some early success like the USFL, but the quality of play was never there. The XFL also failed because most of their games were on Saturday night when nobody watched, they set too many high standards. They should have just aired games on Sunday afternoons where people expected them.

Well I don't claim to be a sports expert, but I am aware that arena football is not new. I just (perhaps incorrectly) assumed that since it was only aired on ESPN and ignored by all major non-cable networks for 15 years that it was not very popular.

I didn't mean to suggest that arena football would disappear as the XFL has. All I meant was that I am not sure it has broad enough appeal to be carried on a major network. I guess I should have been more clear about that.....

Cool

The XFL failed. So did the World League of American Football, NFL Europe, the USFL, and the WFL. I think it's obvious by now that the marketplace will only sustain one professional football league. And right now the NFL is that league.

Bob Costas' interview with Vince McMahon on HBO perfectly summarized the XFL's failures: it was too wrestling for football fans and not wrestling enough for wrestling fans. But as much of a carnival act as it started off as turned into lackluster football and the XFL was doomed from essentially the end of the first half of the first game.

Had McMahon stayed out of the way and let the league stay its course as a low-level professional football league (in other words, Vince should've acted like a silent partner, treating it like an investment instead of a pulpit), maybe it would have had a chance at a second season, but the moment they started introducing feuding angles between Jesse Ventura and coaches, strippers in hot tubs, and camera stunts in the cheerleaders' locker rooms, it was dead on arrival. Lets face it, even in its boom periods wrestling does have a stigma attached to it.

Sports fans, like fans of any form of entertainment, don't like having their intelligence insulted and that's what the XFL trafficked in week in and week out until the final whistle.
