TV Land’s ‘Kirstie’ Cancelled After One Season

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Tuesday July 29, 2014 @ 1:18pm

I’ve learned that TV Land has opted not to renew comedy Kirstie for a second season. The decision comes five months after the show ended its freshman run. Kirstie was not a ratings or critical hit but it featured a dream cast of sitcom stars: Alley, Rhea Perlman and Michael Richards. The show revolved around Madison “Maddie” Banks (Alley), a Broadway star who finds her life turned upside down when Arlo (Eric Petersen), her long-lost son, turns up looking to connect after his adopted mother dies. Perlman played Maddie’s assistant and best friend; Richards played Maddie’s outlandish driver. Possibly factoring into TV Land’s decision was the fact that Kirstie creator/executive producer/showrunner Marco Pennette left at the end of Season 1 for personal reasons and the network had to search for a new showrunner.

I liked the show and the cast, too bad it wasn't renewed.

It's a shame it was cancelled, it had a really good cast.

I never actually saw a full episode but I did view parts of several shows and I thought the three stars were great. Michael is as funny as ever, he hasn't skipped a beat. Kristie and Rhea were funny and Eric Peterson held his own. As I stated, what I saw was good, well written, well performed, and certainly positioned on the right network. So what happened, how come the sum was less than the parts. I think the show may have had a hard to detect achilles heel, the adoption angle. I suspect some folks may feel a uncomfortable with the perception that an adopted parent might be relegated to second tier status upon death, or upon the adopted child reaching adulthood and seeking out their "real" parent(s). I don't think the show handled this angle badly, but I do think this area may be a little sensitive and might have turned some viewers or potential viewers off.

This fading B list actress has had her chances over the years to regain that A list form she had back in the day. Her latest network effort was canceled at the end of last season. Whatever chances she had to get hired for a new show ended this week with the comments she made. No producer wants to cast someone for a show and then have to have their actors answer questions about the comments she made. Kirstie Alley
