Question What if CBS Corp. bought or merged w/ Time Warner

I just thought about this in light of the recent news regarding News Corp. (the owners of the Fox Network and its affiliated TV channels) wanting to purchase Time Warner:
http://www.radiodiscussions.com/show...uy-Time-Warner

To me, CBS buying Time Warner (assuming that have that type of money in the first place) seems to make much more logical since immediately than News Corp./Fox. I mean CBS has already had sort of a working relationship w/ The CW and CBS teaming up w/ Turner Sports on the NCAA March Madness basketball coverage. CBS also teamed w/ TNT back in the '90s to broadcast the Winter Olympics. CBS as it is, seems to be fairly short on established cable channels, unlike say NBC-Universal. For example, imagine if CBS News teamed up w/ CNN (I mean, wouldn't News Corp. have to sell off CNN anyway, since they already have their own news channel, due to anti-trust issues). It would also oddly, make things sort of go full circle since if I'm not mistaken, Ted Turner tried but failed to take over CBS back in the 1980s.

Why does Fox have to acquire/merge with Time Warner in the first place, anyway?

Oh No

Turner also wanted to buy Disney, but failed as well!

If CBS merged with Time Warner...the CW would go or be the 2nd-run station with classic WB Shows....

Default Why China's Richest Man Could Buy Time Warner

Wang Jianlin's plan for a $1.2 billion Beverly Hills compound might be the next big step toward owning a Hollywood studio:

American companies should only be owned by Americans, why can't the rich be content with what they have in their own countries.

That didn't stop Australian Rupert Murdoch from owning News Corp. (the parent company of 20th Century Fox/the Fox Network) or the Japanese company Sony from owning Columbia Pictures.

If CBS and Time Warner did merge, would Showtime be sold off to some other media company, such as LionsGate Entertainment?

I'd be surprised if the FTC and FCC approves any of these mergers, quite frankly.

20th Century Fox/News Corp. and Time Warner merged would control way too much of the media market share. The same with a CBS/Viacom and Time Warner merger.

I could be wrong though. We'll see...

If Buena Vista (Disney) ever merged with Time Warner and/or 20th Century Fox/News Corp....OH GOD!

Let's say that if Viacom hypothetically reunites with CBS instead of CBS merging with Time Warner, I wonder with one of the big four networks Time Warner will merge? Comcast (as far as I know) isn't interested in selling NBC and the Murdoch family/News Corp. won't give up Fox (which if ever they won't). Thus, I most likely see the 5 things happening as follows:

1. Viacom reunites with CBS.

The bad news is that if they bring the two companies back together, one of the two chairmen (Sumner Redstone and Les Moonves) will have to work for the other.

2. CBS Television Distribution will be combined with Paramount Television (bringing shows like Dr. Phil, Judge Judy, Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, etc.) under Paramount's wing and thus saving the Big Ticket Television name.

3. Time Warner will merge with ABC (bringing along its 8 TV stations, ABC News, CNN. ABC's sports properties and Turner's sports properties plus ABC's TV production unit, ABC Studios) all under Time Warner/ABC's and Warner Brothers wings.

To be more specific, was either Disney is going to spin ABC off as a separate company or they'll sell it to Time Warner. I say Time Warner/ABC merger would be a better choice because (I know Rupert Murdoch has given up on trying to takeover TW) but if TW merged with ABC it'll make Time Warner toxic for Murdoch and Fox (as the FCC does not allow one person to control two of the big four major networks and two stations in the largest media markets).

4. Both ABC and Turner have a decent amount of sports properties to combine the two into one sports division for the ABC network that will control the sports that airs on ABC, TNT, TruTV and TBS.

5. Disney will combine with Discovery Communications.

Merging with Discovery Communications will not keep the company in case Murdoch wants to try again at a bid to take over Time Warner.

Total amount for all three media mergers:
  • Viacom/CBS: $48 Billion Dollars
  • Time Warner/ABC: $42 Billion dollars
  • Disney/Discovery: $35 Billion dollars
  • Total combined: $125 Billion dollars

Ted again tried to acquire CBS in the 90s and coincidentally looked at acquiring King World at the same time.
