As I have suggested in the past, the entire main cast of characters on Modern Family can be considered “supporting” because all of the series regulars have to be nominated for Supporting Actor Emmys rather than Lead Actor Emmys. Can anyone consider an entire main cast of a show (including that show's supporting cast members) “overused”?

Regarding Mary Tyler Moore, the "void" was filled by great actors like Ted Knight, Gavin McLeod, Georgia Engel, and Ed Asner. If any sitcom could afford to lose a couple of characters to spinoffs, this was certainly one.
Also, the writer seems to casually dismiss the immense popularity of Henry Winkler's Fonz at the time -- it's actually quite EASY to see how Happy Days lasted that long in view of the craze. |

I'll Say:
Sanford And Son-When Redd Foxx was out on strike they overused Grady, by having him take Fred's place looking after Lamont and the house. Too much of Grady was a bad thing. Good Times-During Season 5 the supporting cast was bumped up with the departures of Esther Rolle and John Amos. Too much Wilona, Bookman, and Penny. |

Regarding Night Court: IMO. I think that the supporting characters had a legit place on the show. For God's sake...Buddy was Harry's dad. He should have had a bigger role. I wanted to see him and Harry as a real father and son duo.

I agree 100% about Happy Days; Fonzie was WAY overused!
And let's face it: He was supposed to be a hood, right? There were no hoods in the 50's who were as good as gold as he was. They were all juvinal delinquents! I remember one episode where the Fonz convinces Joannie to stop smoking. And that was way before they discovered it's bad for you. Come on!
