Very interesting article that I wouldn't have noticed that gap as it's being called from the late 70's to early 80's, and looking back it does appear that way that many newer sitcoms from that period were stale.
Oh and good call on Kate & Allie, I watched reruns on the USA network in the 90's and don't recall ever liking the show which boggles the mind as to how it was in the Top 10. |

Interesting post, but I think the Brady Bunch pioneered this formula. And there were a few Diff'rent Strokes episodes with similar plots to Brady Bunch episodes, so they probably copied this formula from them.

Great article. A lot of 80s sitcoms were forgettable.

Thanks for bringing this up. The sitcom made a great comeback with The Cosby Show.

Should this technically or really be called the "Tandem Productions Curse". Tandem Productions and its sister/succeeding company, Embassy Television was responsible for One Day at a Time, Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, and Silver Spoons?

I'm guessing the show seems too dated now. It had a what could be considered, groundbreaking premise for its time (e.g. two divorced mothers living together) that just doesn't seem that daring or provocative to a modern audience. Also you can argue that the joke-writing was more than often on the stale side. |

Kate & Allie didn't premiere until 1984, so the article's claim about it being in the top 10 in 1983 is false.

An interesting article. I don't agree with it but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I think out of all the 1980s shows that were sitcoms, Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts Of Life will be most remembered. They ran a long time. Not counting the Jeffersons since it ran into the 1980s. But those 2 shows will be the most remembered. They both went to Nick At Nite back in the early 2000s. Other sitcoms of that decade did NOT. When they did revenge of the 80s week back in 2001, they only selected a few shows like ALF, 227, and a few others to show certain episodes of. I forget what others shows they had. But those 2 are for sure the 2 that will be most remembered. Wait, Facts and Strokes were also included in this marathon as was Square Pegs.
Gimme A Break! and Silver Spoons, however, have been pretty much forgotten as with many other 1980s shows. Just look at DVD releases. GAB only had season 1 in the USA, Canada treated it much better. SS had just season 1 released. 227 just season 1. Amen hasn't even had season 1 released yet. I think it's the only 1980s show that still needs a release. Just look at the re-runs. Silver Spoons had reruns into 1997 I think. After that it was over. GAB had them in 1997-1998 on USA along w Webster, Wings and Facts and Perfect Strangers. Then the network dropped them all. Amen had re-runs on TBS in the early 2000s. Now, I think, other new cable networks are airing re-runs like BET and TV One, but still, nothing stays on for more than a year or so. |
