ABC and "Modern Family" To Pay for all New York City Hall Weddings for One Day Only

What’s the best way to promote a TV wedding? To pay for a bunch of real-life weddings, apparently.

ABC has announced that, in celebration of the upcoming wedding between characters Mitch and Cam on "Modern Family", the network will cover the cost of any marriage licenses or wedding ceremonies at the New York City Clerk’s office on Monday, May 12.

All couples who are looking to tie the knot at the City Clerk’s office at 141 Worth Street in New York City, between the standard walk-in hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., will have the $35 cost of their union covered by ABC.

The promotion will last for one day only.

ABC is using this offer as a way to stir up excitement for the final two episodes of the sitcom’s fifth season. During this two-part finale, the characters Mitch and Cam will finally have their wedding.

The couple, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, got engaged earlier this season after a Supreme Court decision last June defeated California's ban on same-sex marriage.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jeffrey Richman, one of show’s openly gay writers and producers, discussed the decision to acknowledge the ruling.

“We don't usually do California-centric stories -- and while we don't really identify where the characters live, we knew we weren't going to send them to another state to get married and they weren't going to have a fake commitment ceremony. We'd avoided that for four seasons,” he said.

“Mitch and Cam have been in a relationship for eight years, they already are a family and they have a daughter, so there needed to be a reason for them to get married. This became the ‘why now.’”

The first part of the "Modern Family" season finale airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, 8 p,m, CT.
