TV NBC Cancels "Community"

NBC Cancels "Community" after Five Seasons
by NELLIE ANDREEVA
May 9, 2014

After cheating death several times, "Community‘s" luck came to an end today. Ironically, "Community‘s" previous eleventh-hour renewal, clinched in that four-series deal producer Sony TV was able to negotiate with NBC last May on the strength of its buzzy new show "The Blacklist", came with the presumption that the fifth season of the show would be its last.

It was a fitting last chapter, with creator Dan Harmon returning to the helm. But as NBC’s comedy woes began last fall, the end game plan was shelved. "Community" didn’t hit it out of the park in Season 5 but it didn’t blow it either, staying very close to the Season 4 average, which had earned a renewal. It averaged a 1.5 rating in adults 18-49, down 0.1 from last season, and actually gained viewership — 3.7 million vs. 3.5 million last season.

It outrated NBC’s other returning Thursday comedy, "Parks and Recreation", which has been renewed, despite facing much stiffer competition in CBS’ "The Big Bang Theory". It also has a passionate following.

I don't think it even has anything to do with ratings anymore. It is what networks want to keep on the air. That is the only sense I can make out of how they determine to cancel a show, and keep shows that have lower ratings.

Default “Community” fans should be happy they got 5 seasons — it was born to be canceled

http://time.com/94629/community-canc...nbc-dan-harmon

"It was the sort of show born to be cancelled — that is, rewarding intense attention, willing to take risks and fail, unafraid to shift tones and go dark — and yet it ran five seasons,” says James Poniewozik. PLUS: Joel McHale grateful to have been “on the coolest show ever,” 29 times “Community” was TV’s funniest show, fans are devastated on Twitter, and "Community" was the most meta-textual half-hour comedy in network TV history.

It pays to be friends with Lorne Michaels, huh?

Yay, finally NBC.

Community was in my opinion, without a doubt, the dumbest, goofiest, WTF sitcom that ever was. I tries it when it first came on, absolutely hated it, tried it again recently and was just as bad. Bad. Very bad.

I know this show had a cult following, so I am sorry for your loss, but it did go about five seasons, which was five seasons too long.

They should have move this show to TBS in order to survive. Cutting too close to a 100th episode is lame.

"Community" Unlikely To Go Elsewhere, Creator Dan Harmon Reacts to Cancellation
by NELLIE ANDREEVA
May 11, 2014

School is likely out for good in Greendale. While other comedies are being actively shopped around, I hear there are no such plans for cult NBC series "Community", which was cancelled on Friday after five seasons.

I hear there has been incoming interest in reviving the Sony TV-produced show from a suitor but a deal is not likely. I hear creator Dan Harmon, who returned as showrunner for Season 5 after a season-long dismissal, is ready to move on to other things, prepping Season 2 of his Adult Swim animated comedy "Rick & Morty" and figuring out his next project.

Still, he is not parting with the show lightly.

We all know what happened yesterday, we all got drunk,” Harmon said on his live podcast at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival taped the day after the "Community" cancellation. “I was in a place of grief…It’ll take weeks to sink in.

The day "Community" was axed, Harmon was flying to Portland for the fest.

I was on my way to LAX and somebody from Sony called me,” Harmon said. “The fans of that show have more reason to be upset than I do. I can try to make another show and also I got paid for every minute I cared about that show. The people that are most devastated are people who put unpaid labor into the show [aka fans]. They didn’t get compensated for it. They loved the show.

Heading into Season 5 after an eleventh-hour renewal, the presumption was that it would be "Community‘s" last — a fitting final chapter with Harmon back at the helm to guide the series into the sunset. But as NBC’s comedy woes began last fall, the end game plan was shelved.

Still, I hear the producers felt this was probably "Community‘s" best season creatively, so the thought of going out strong has helped alleviate some of the sting from the cancellation.

"Community" also bowed out on a positive ratings note, growing its viewership from 3.5 million last season to 3.7 million. It outrated NBC’s other veteran NBC Thursday comedy, "Parks and Recreation", which was renewed, despite facing much stiffer competition from CBS’ "The Big Bang Theory".

It also has a passionate following, which explains why there would be interest from other places in picking up the show. Harmon had hinted in March that he’d heard “whispers from dark corners” about a possible future for "Community" on a VOD service like Netflix or Hulu if NBC cancels it.

I like Joel McHale (he's from Seattle after all and I "knew" him when he was a regular on "Almost Live". I never watched but a few episodes of this mainly b/c I can't stand Chevy Chase, and although he hasn't been on in a while, I never could get into it. But I am surprised that it's been on for five seasons already. Where has the time gone? Seems like it just started.

Default Joel McHale and Gillian Jacobs are still promoting “Community” despite its cancelatio

http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/s222/co...son-watch.html

They’re both spending this week talking "Community" at the Monte Carlo Television Festival. "You can cancel us all you want but we'll never stop promoting Community,” Jacobs wrote on Instagram.
