Default Why is this show aimed at younger kids?

I just find it a bit weird because Dan's shows are normally aimed at teens and older audiences. I would think that this show would be aimed for the same age group, but mainly the audiences that grew up watching iCarly and Victorious. I was 12 when iCarly first aired so I pretty much grew up with the characters. Sam and Cat does have a more childish feel to it in comparison to other Dan shows, but why? Why aim this show at younger kids? I'm not saying I don't enjoy it, but I just find it a little weird that the previous 2 shows where these characters originate from were more mature and then their spinoff is more childish.

I do like that this show isn't trying to be like Drake and Josh or Kenan and Kel, but the humor in this show just isn't the same as past Dan shows. I know if it's because this is aimed at younger audiences or because Dan's losing his touch, but that's just me nitpicking ^^'

But if this show was aimed at teens and was more along the lines of maybe D&J with it's plots and situations, do you think that would make a difference?

Both.

It's aimed at young(er) viewers because S&C was Nickelodeon's Hail May attempt to try and pull some of the viewers away from Disney who were pounding them weekly in the ratings the last year and a half. They foolishly listened to online media (Twitter, Facebook) and thought Jennette and Araia had a young fan base that would rival and surpass Disney, so this is why they targeted at a much younger audience than Victorious, or iCarly.

Dan has also lost his touch, IMO.

He's finally gone to the well too many times where he's not just writing crap that isn't remotely funny, but is just funny enough for the young viewers who do tune into S&C each week.

Everything ferrisb1-1 said is right on the money. Nick foolishly wants to beat Disney at their own game yet they're on two different playing fields. Nickelodeon has always, at least imo, been more mature than networks like Disney Channel and Cartoon Network when it came to kids shows. I remember the shows I use to watch like Roundhouse, Pete & Pete, Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy, etc. were all cleverly written, had sexual innuendo, and even cursed at times (saying words like "damn/dammit" and "hell"). They were borderline mature content and didn't belittle their viewers nor marginalize them as just kids or teens. Basically, Nick got away with a lot more back in the day mostly because all the shows were trying to see how far they could push their limits.

They need to wake up and realize they are not Disney Channel and don't and never have had the same viewers DC has. Ariana and Jennette's fan base for the most part are the same age as them and both of them know that themselves. Jennette makes Vines and Tweets where she'll just straight up curse or make a sexual joke. Ariana has done the same herself sometimes. Nick (and Dan) basically need to grow up (again).

After Nick's teen block bombed in 2011/12 they diverted all efforts towards a younger audience. Nick probably asked him to do a show that would appeal to a younger audience.

I honestly don't get the complaints that S&C is a more childish show than any of Dan Schneider's other shows. The only explanation I can think of is how little them being kids matters as odd as that sounds. So while nothing happens is much weirder than what happened in other shows they had school, relationships, parents, and all the other stuff that goes along with growing up. Meanwhile S&C has a twelve year old kid win a bunch of Tuna in a poker game and then proceeds to charge people to watch somebody jump them with a motorbike. This show has very little a teenager could relate to.

And I don't care. S&C might be completely ridiculous, but it's more fun than anything else currently on Nickelodeon or Disney. I don't watch S&C to empathize with the characters or learn a moral; I watch because it's funny. I get wanting more realistic characters, but I'm tired of what has passed for realistic on kids' shows recently.

Was one of the reasons (while of course the main reason given all of the behind the scenes turmoil) why Sam & Cat flopped because when compared to its two parent shows (iCarly and Victorious), the plots were too childish? Those two previous shows were clearly more geared towards teens, who naturally made the shows popular.
