10 Plot Twists That Totally Ruined Awesome TV Shows

A plot twist can be a wonderful thing, or it can be a facepalm-inducing kiss of death for a TV show. When writers get it right, it can breath new life into a tired formula and catch even the most devoted fans off guard, but if they screw up, longtime fans may end up feeling alienated and ultimately end up abandoning the show as a result. For every brilliant twist out there, there are some iconically awful ones which have been the mockery of fans and non-fans alike ever since.

These twists failed for a variety of reasons, though the main reason is simple implausibility. The writers asked audiences to suspend their disbelief to such a ridiculous degree that the show ultimately collapsed under its own weight and was never the same again.

TV shows, particularly popular ones, can be pretty reluctant to change. The old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” seems like a rallying call for network TV shows. This is why there is a ceaseless barrage of cop shows with will-they-won’t-they romantic entanglements and sitcoms with, well, the same thing. Animated shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy point out the ridiculousness of continuing to return to stasis at the end of every episode (Homer becomes a millionaire, then loses all of his money, then goes back to working at the plant probably fifty times). Networks reason that if Gilligan ever left the island, there wouldn’t be a show anymore.

But magical TV worlds in which nothing ever changes can become stagnant and pretty boring, so we’re here to suggest big twists to TV shows that need a kick in the pants to stay fresh. Not all of these shows are bad, in fact some are pretty great, but all of them could take off again after a new creative jolt. Just because a TV show is successful doesn’t mean audiences will resist change: the last season of Breaking Bad proved that exciting TV could be made by throwing out the formula altogether. Obviously, some people are going to think that these changes would negatively impact these shows (the title is called Shocking Twists for a reason), but the important thing is for these shows to consider ideas that tweak their concepts.

SLIDERS

Loved the show, the premise was brilliant, then, the freaky aliens came. The show ran it's course, and they tried to stretch out the idea. Cast changes and cast exits also ran it into the ground.

What basically killed Sliders was heavy executive meddling, who wanted to "dumb the show down" (i.e. making it more "action-oriented" and having more sex appeal, hence them bringing in Kari Wuhrer in Season 3). Sliders went from having an intriguing speculative fiction premise (e.g. what if the Nazi's won World War II) to by the third season, ripping off movies like Jurassic Park.
