The Day of the Doctor has been and gone. We were all blown away/disappointed/confused/moved (delete depending on what your expectations were – I loved it, but that’s a whole different article). Irrespective of what the special was lacking or what it delivered, one thing is certain; Doctor Who’s next story arc is set. SPOILERS… Gallifrey is not destroyed – it’s simply hidden somewhere in the Universe thanks to some clever retconning and button pushing by the 10th, 11th and War Doctors. Now the Doctor must find his home and save his people. It’s fairly likely that this will form the bulk of series 8′s (and Peter Capaldi’s debut) ongoing narrative once Matt Smith is finished dying on Trenzalore and out of the way.

Series-spanning narrative arcs are not entirely new to Doctor Who; with the Key To Time quest forming the entirety of a Tom Baker series and the Trial of a Time Lord seeing off Colin Baker’s Doctor; but it is only since the 2005 relaunch that they have been a yearly staple of the show. With the exciting whiff of the next one still fresh in our noses, lets have a look back at all the main arcs New Who has employed and work out how they rank alongside one another.
