Official: Vikings-Giants the worst MNF matchup ever

When ESPN extended its deal with the NFL for the broadcast rights to Monday Night Football through 2021, they agreed to pay the league $1.8 billion, or $105 million per game.

This week, that’s $105 million per win between the combatants, the Vikings and the Giants.

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the combined .090 winning percentage of the 1-4 Vikings and 0-6 Giants is officially the worst such record this late in the season in the 44-year history of MNF.

Granted, bad teams can play memorable football — so long as your definition of memorable is flexible. And having a major market team in the middle of a train-wreck season, along with the debut of Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman, should make it a little interesting.

But this is not what anyone at the network would consider a good return on investment.

Neither team averaged more than 3.5 yards per play. Peyton Hillis scored a TD for crying out loud. And yet, it was beamed to the entire nation. And because America is addicted to the NFL like it's Walter White's finest product, it was watched by 13 million people.

Viewership aside, the amount of money put forth for one awful game of football got me thinking. Sure, the NFL is the most valuable television product in the world at the moment. But couldn't ESPN have put its enormous mountain of money to better use? Like say, an entire season of English Premier League soccer, valued at $83.3 million per year.

It's not a direct comparison given the impossibility of quantifying just how much one MNF game is worth in the scope of ESPN's contract with the NFL. However, even if you value last night's game at $100 million dollars instead of $118.7 million (1.9 billion divided by 17) it's astounding just how many top sporting events could be had for that price. It's just another sign of the NFL's dominance and the incredibly high price networks have to pay to air the league's games. All of the values below have been previously reported publicly and are annual costs at $100 million dollars or less...

In the beginning of week 7, we thought that the Cowboy-Eagle game was the best, Viking-Giant game was the worst, but at the end of both games, it turns out it wasn't.

The worst game in Week 7 was the Cowboy-Eagle one. The Eagles was overrated with a fewest points and they are now a sore thumb in the entire public. The Giants are going to stomp on the Eagles in Philadelphia this Sunday.

As a matter of fact, the best game of Week 7 was the Bear-Redskin one.

This Sunday, the Cowboys will have good matchup with the Lions in Detroit, but the Redskins are the only NFC East team left to play the Broncos in Denver. The Redskins are partially prepared, but they may not beat the Broncos. Just make sure the Broncos win and the Redskins lose in that close Colorado capitol city game.
