Well, you can always claim that Indiana Jones was necessary, because after the NAZIS were melted, the Ark would've presented a constant danger to anyone discovering the Ark on that island who decided to open it without knowing what's about to happen. Due to Indiana Jones, the Ark was taken out of circulation, locked away and no longer a threat to body and soul.

In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy is given the benefit of two "B" plots. He goes from a skeptic ("I don't believe in magic or a lot of superstitious hocus-pocus!") to a believer ("They don't know what they've got there."). He also reconciles with his jilted ex-girlfriend, Marion Ravenwood. In the end, he loses the Ark to the Army Intelligence, but the film subtly suggests that what he has found (faith in a higher power and love with Marion) is more important. Raiders is a character-driven adventure story of personal redemption and reconciliation. It's not about Indy's effects on the Ark of the Covenant. It's about the Ark of Covenant's and Marion's effects on Indiana Jones. From this point of view, Indiana Jones is hardly "irrelevant" to the plot. Indiana Jones' character arc *is* the plot. |
