Day 1. The main reason this show lasted 3 seasons is because during the first 2, it had a great time slot (Thursdays at 9:30 pm on NBC). Also helped that the creators of Friends made this show too, but it was awful.

Have you seen any previews for her new sitcom? Looks like it could be an ok show. It will be nice to see Rhea and Kirstie together again.

I haven't seen any because I haven't watched TV Land since Hot in Cleveland ended it's season. I'll have to check it out though. It will be great to see Rhea and Kirstie again. It's hard to believe it's been 20 years since Cheers ended.

I really enjoyed the show during the first two seasons, but I had stopped watching by the third season.

  • Other Thoughts:

This show is just not funny.
Umm... where did that new guy come from and why isn't he funny?
The whole show jumped as soon as they started to flirt with the idea that Josh was gay. Ever since then, they have made crude gay jokes and have had many "very special" episodes where Josh almost confronts his sexuality but then turns straight. Why doesn't he just turn gay already!
What was the deal with Kirstie Alley's crappy hair? She sucks. She was pretty good in Cheers, and also the movie Summer School, but she can't carry a show. Hell, she couldn't carry someone's dirty jockstrap even though she is pretty slutty.
The very second Kirstie Alley opened her mouth. Whatever do the network execs see in her? She helped to ruin a veritable TV icon: Cheers. Eccch, Eccccch, and double Eccccchh!! Thursday nights on NBC are a wasteland until E.R. comes on.
Kirstie Alley is a big fat slob. She was good in Summer School, though she didn't give up her ass to Mark Harmon quick enough, and then she was OK in Cheers, but now with that **** in her hair. Then she was in Look Who's Talking, with John Travolta, who should be ashamed for being in anything with this beached whale. How she became an actress with a show is beyond me.
This show was bad from day one. Why is it still on the air?
I liked this show a lot at first - any show that has a strong female character (even if she is whiney and somewhat obnoxious) can't be all bad. But lately, as someone else pointed out, they've had a lot of s******ing about Josh's possible homosexuality. Most of the jokes have been along the lines of Josh referring to a girlfriend and the other characters reacting with incredulity and mugging at each other. This is funny?
I'd rather be forced to watch a test-pattern 24 hours a day for a whole year than sit through this garbage. This proves that Kirstie must have made a pact with Satan in order to get added to the cast of "Cheers."
This show was actually pretty amusing at first. And contrary to all the fat jokes made by everyone else, I thought it was great to see a bigger woman in a sexy, powerful role. (Yes, her raspy whining is annoying, but I'd hardly call her a WHALE. She's curvy and very attractive, skunk striped hair or not.) It just became ridiculous when that guy bought her out and became her boss or partner or whatever he is supposed to be. She lost all credibility as a powerful independent career woman and became much more simpering and whining. That said, I have to say, Kathy Najimy is an amazing actress and a really cool woman. She is wasted on this crappy show---but at least she is more visible here.
This show definitely jumped the shark when they changed the opening credits and added Alec's character. Not that the original opening credits were all that great, but really...a bunch of bras hanging from buildings? Give me a break. The first time I saw the new credits, I knew the show was done for. Oh yeah, this is also the same time Josh got a girlfriend (Chloe). Please!
    Shouldn't Veronica's Closet be recloseted?
Crap from the get go! How did this show make it to a third season?!
When they killed off Alec at beginning of 3rd season and replaced him with the blond bimbo. It was almost interesting and funny prior to the 3rd season, now I've totally stopped watching.
give the babe a brain (she's got the body) and a real voice (only marilyn monroe gets away with that voice & those gestures). I'm a Kirsty Alley Fan & it's hard to watch the show puking like it does now---I like the babe but not her behavior, I also like the Najimy lady.
I feel that Veronica's Closet jumped /after/ the first episode, which was funny. It was all downhill from there. With the first episode, Kirstie Alley was great, Kathy Najimy was great, Wallace Langham was great. Even Daryl Mitchell and Dan Cortese were pretty good. The show was mildly funny the rest of the season, though not as funny as the premiere. Then it really jumped the shark again by bringing in Ron Silver as Alec, the new owner of the company. Silver is much better in serious roles like Henry Kissinger or the villain in "Blue Steel" with Jamie Lee Curtis playing the police officer. But, since I thought it was wonderful to have a bigger woman in the lead who was sexy, one I wouldn't mind marrying - even if some of her clothes didn't exactly match (and Kathy Najimy isn't too bad herself), I kept watching. I just wish that Langham's character, Josh, would have been allowed to come out of the closet. Instead, they give him a similarly "ambigious" girlfriend, Chloe. BTW, I put ambigious in quotes because I abhor stereotyping, but that's another issue entirely. And, eventually, Mitchell and Cortese dragged it all down. And, since all of those things, along with Silver and Alley's lack of chemistry, bored me to death, I just tuned out. At least NBC had the decency to put it out of its misery after the third season. None of the episodes could ever hold a candle to the premiere episode.
Kirstie cast her real life toy-boy in role of spoiled son of new owner. He sucked. Kirstie could've made the show work if she played Ronnie as a brazen ,selfish slob--but NO --she had to be "likeable" and stretch for the laffs --hence Kathy (the funny one) Najimi was never utilized properly...and she fell flat most of time until she jumoed ship after dismal 3rd season --just before cancellation was announced. Damn ! now Dan Cortese won't get paid for taking his shirt off ! Dan "the man" should stop highlighting his hair like a *** & just do straight-to-vid Shannon Tweed softcore flix ala Marc Singer & Greg Harrison. Dan -thanks for the pec work!
I consider it a strange sort of achievement that someone could put together a sitcom prominently featuring beautiful babes in lingerie that I can't stand to watch.
when the stupid new bimbo girl took alec's place in the company after he croaked.
Can I be the first one to give a positive comment on KIRSTIE ALLEY's TV Show VERONICA'S CLOSET. That show is sooo funny, and Kirstie Alley and her cast did a great job. We can watch this great comedy weekdays on USA Network.
There were a LOT of things that made this an awful show, most of which have been mentioned. It bears repeating that, for me at least, seeing the unappealing, abrasive, and downright unattractive Ron Silver cast opposite Kirstie Alley (who I personally adore!) pretty much started this show up the shark ramp. Add to that Kirstie's AWFUL hair (it looked like she did her own coloring at home -- fine for a nobody like ME but for a Hollywood star?!) and the weird gay/sexual innuendos (...not that there's anything wrong with that, they should have just had the guts to go one way or the other with it), and you have a show that just never had a chance. But what REALLY made me hate this show, what made it difficult to watch week after week (and I never did watch it again when they moved it from Thursday nights), was the fact that I could not get past the fact that Kirstie/Veronica, supposed owner of this supposed mega-company, was forced to SHARE AN OFFICE with company co-president Ron/Alec! Can you think of a single company on the planet where the two top execs share an office?! Heck, I'm an underling secretary and I have my own office! Yes, I know it's TV and it's not real life -- but some things are so unrealistic, so obviously placed for script convenience, that it is difficult (no, impossible) to look past them. I'm glad this show finally got cancelled. It was a good idea (I think someone mentioned earlier about the lingerie -- who wouldn't want to watch a show about THAT?!) that just got out of hand. Oh, and for the record, it was nice for a change to see some curvy gals in leading roles on TV -- we do need more of this. Not everyone fantasizes for anorexics like Calista, Courtney, and Jennifer.
I had such high hopes.Kirstie Alley is a good actress-and she added such humanity to other roles she had.I might have been expecting too much, but something seemed to be missing from the first episode. The show had a few good spots, but not enough to make me watch it too regularly. Another website calls this the worst show on television.
Where to begin?....Every time I watched this show, I felt like I was witnessing a train wreck. As each season ended, I was sure it was never to be seen again, and then like a Friday the 13th movie, rose up and started a new season. So I thought that if they are still keeping it alive, it's gotta be better this time around (we all know the answer to that). What a waste of talent and potential all around. (yet I kept watching it...). Can't wait for syndication.
This is individual, but may be how many people decide to bail....Mid-2nd season, I asked myself ,"Why am I watching this?" I didn't care anymore, so I stopped!
This is the worst program that has ever been on television ever ever ever ever.
this show never jumped the shark, it was so funny I miss it already. all the characters were funny and josh too !
MY GOD. I would rather bamboo shoots shoved under my fingernails than be subjected to this unbelievable tripe! I never watched it on NBC (thank god) but i caught it a couple times on USA. what the hell were they thinking over there on USA? Every single episode revolves around self-centered Veronica and her whining every 5 SECONDS. and everyone around her just playing up to that, nobody on that show seemed to ever get a word in edge wise because that stupid b*tch was in every scene, yelling and throwing a hissy fit or talking about sex or whatever. i detest the show "cursed" or "weber" or whatever the HELL its called, but i would rather watch hours of that than a single second of hearing kirstie alleys whiney ass mouth. I just want to scream!
Big jump o the shark when they replaced the somewhat interesting Alec-Veronica banter with that blonde bimbette. I watched about ten minutes of that dreadful character before I blew final chunks on this show.
Day One! Sorry but this show is on exactly the same level as "Suddenly Salad...I mead Susan". First of all, that theme song....never before have words and music been twisted into a more obnoxious manner. The reason that I must comment on this show (because there are, of course thousands of other bad or worse shows past and present) is because I feel that someone needs to take the entertainment media to task for their pre-show hype that they heaped upon this show and "Suddenly Susan". Though no critic will admit to it now, I vividly remember the "NBC's biggest hit!" testimonials before the show even aired. This show was praised up and down (until it actually aired). Lucille Ball comparisons were all over the place (Kirstie Alley is the next Lucy, Brooke Shields is the next Lucy, Jenny McCarthy is the next Lucy - not that I'm a huge Lucy fan or anything but COME ON!!)I know that obviously many testimonials come from the network itself so of course they are going to try to hype it up. That makes sense but does not make it any less annoying. NBC is the king of huckster promotion. I think what infuriates me about this show (and Suddenly Susan) is that they (NBC) coddled these shows while jerking around "News Radio", "Just Shoot Me" and even "Fraiser" - to a lesser extent. NBC really pisses me off when it cancels a good show by saying "the ratings just weren't there" and than renews this crap for another season (I know it's gone now, but it should have been put to bed way before) People were right to protest the cancellation of "Freaks and Geeks". These network executives are paid a lot of money to do their job and when an obviously good show gets cancelled it doesn't take a media veteran to see that someone didn't just make a simple mistake but a calculated bad judgment that did not take into account the viewers (you know, those who actually watch). Veronica's Closet is the prime example of why someone should or hopefully has...cleaned house over at NBC. In the meantime I wish to constantly remind NBC of this show and its twin ("Suddenly - well you know). Next time NBC tries to give people clever marketing ("It's new to you!") over substance. By the way, Giselle the supermodel doesn't have a show yet, she just might be the new Lucy!
This suffered the same fate as Jesse. It was tolerable to good on the Thursday night schedule. But when ur show isn't up to such Crap as ER which was good for 3 seasons or Just Shoot Me which be a least tolerable if they knocked the annoying f**k wad DAVID SPADE off then ur moved to dumping ground know as NBC Monday. They just stopped caring and it really showed.Kristy Alley went season 6 to 11 on Cheers and never ruined it.
To be fair, Veronica's Closet was flawed, but initially had a decent and amusing supporting cast and potentially funny episodes. Any show about an underwear business needs 2 guys to giggle about it, Josh was great sarcastic comedy relief, and Olive was a decent supporting player. It was best when they made fun of Veronica. However, any potential they had was blown to smithereens when the second season began and they felt Veronica needed an annoying love interest (Alex), not to mention losing her company. Season three was a joke when they brought in that blonde bimbo. Instead of improving on a show that had a chance, they tampered with it and turned it into one of the least watchable shows on the air.
Where do I begin? The jokes were lame. The characters were stupid. The women were not sexy. The premise never made sense. It was supposed to be a rip off of Victoria's Secret, yet they never had any models on the show. Where was the T & A? Kirstie Alley dressed like Maude, with those long sweater vests. She wore the same outfit every week. I don't remember any bright colors, she was always in shades of black and grey.
When they added this whiny sounding blond girl that sounded like Minnie Mouse. I forget her name, but I first saw her in Maxim. Sure, she was hot all wrapped up in nice lingerie for those pages, but when I heard her on tv, I had to change the channel to avoid my TV breaking! She played (well, obviously) a lingerie model....and what was Kathy Najimy doing on the show? She is a great actress, Peggy Hill is the best character she's ever done. But here, she's in a trash heap. Poor Kathy.
Kristie Alley is a very talented actress. She helped breathe new life into "Cheers" at a time when it could definitely have otherwise ended earlier than it eventually did. But she had (a) a good show concept to work with and (b) a great cast, especially Ted Danson. Unfortunately, when it came time for her to become a headliner, she had neither. Alley is best in supporting roles;here, she was occasionally funny (particularly in the first year), but also truly struggled to carry the whole thing. Maybe a female version of the current hit "According To Jim" (fattie marries hottie!) would have better suited Alley than this shaky workplace concept; it certainly would have been much needed wish-fulfillment for plus-sized females everywhere! Also, Alley has too little supporting help here (Ron Silver's a good actor, but as far as TV comedy goes, he's no Ted Danson). Overall, a few laughs here and there (most in Season 1), but definitely one that missed the mark. Maybe Alley should limit herself only to guest appearances on other shows from now on.......
This show was great, save one flaw. Not enough Perry and Leo. These are two of the greatest characters in the history of television. As a team, they're perfect. They need their own show, about their lives, escapades, and adventures. Make this happen.
When the already horrible character of Ron what's his name died and left an even more horrible wife. Ron was a horrible addition; but relationships die and companies are sold and he could have left. However, when his wife showed up (in a thinly veiled and morbidly disgusting Marilyn Monroe impression), all was lost. It was the death blow. The five main characters could have carried the show, but for some reason, they didn't have the faith. Too bad.
Somewhere in the second season things looked bad. I liked Kirstie's character, as well as the other regulars (before Alec). While some think that the is he gay/is he not gay issue dragged on too long, I think the writers' reluctance to choose a direction made it more opportune to make funnier moments in the show. They could have executed it better, though. And I do agree that before too long, the woman who assisted Ronnie did become obsolete, and she could have been useful, too, had Ronnie continued in her self absorption like Ron Harris from Barney Miller did. I have one question, though. In the 3rd and final season, was it just me, or were there a few sitcoms whose characters made fun of (even called for the cancellation of) Veronica's Closet in their scripts? It seems a couple of sitcoms made shots at the show, like they did in the 60s with My Mother the Car. The show had more personality than Suddenly Susan and Spin City, edged out Just Shoot Me, and was barely beaten by NewsRadio for recent workplace comedy quality.
Writing that Veronica's Closet "had more personality than Suddenly Susan and Spin City, [and] edged out Just Shoot Me" says what? This series is an example of what the mega powerful want to be on TV. In addition to purposely watering-down education, TV, this mesmerizing opiate of the masses, is a tool of the mega powerful such that the great majority has ceded all of its power to few. A handful of men and families control the world's economy, monetary policy and governments to make themselves richer and more powerful. Reclaim what is yours. Stay engaged.
This was one of the WORST shows ever broadcast on television. Kirstie Alley's whiny voice and dried up face just made me want to puke. One of many "ensemble" shows that just didn't work.
you people are just plain ****! Veronicas Closet is good and Kirstie Alley is a good (comedy) Actress. like in "For Richer or Poorer" and that really **** Disney channel film "The tooth fairy" she made and hour and a half of **** bearable. i cant believe the way that you dissed Veronicas Closet IT IS A GOOD PROGRAM! and you might want to check your facts as veronicas closets last show was in 2001 and is still playing in the U.k an satellite and ordinary tv channels.
It jumped the shark when they looked for new and inventive ways to hide Kirstie's fat ass. Who cares if her ass got as fat as a "Taxi"? She is talented and cute and the show could have been better if they used Kathy Najimy (another good actress poorly used) as more than just a prop to make Kirstie look thinner. By the way, I can't stand the new Pier 1 commercials that Kirstie is in. Now they have her completely hidden behind furniture, plants, etc. She's fat! We know! We still love her, give the girl a break!
Network executives and all the "suits" behind television shows are idiots. The first season of Veronica's Closet was wonderful (and the amazing Kathy Najimy deserves her own show). So what do the execs do? They change a formula that was working just fine. Veronica went from humorously neurotic to annoyingly pathetic, she lost ownership of the company, they brought in that completely unfunny Alec.... haven't they ever heard the expression "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?" It almost seems like purposeful sabotage was done to this once very promising show.
Easily one of the ten worst sitcoms of all time, Veronica's Closet was Kirstie Alley's attempt to cash in on her Cheers fame. Instead of cashing in Alley destroyed her career with this turkey. I can't belive this show actually lasted three seasons on NBC. Veronica's Closet was so bad that it made the Brian Benben Show look funny by comparison.
Yes, I am aware that I was one of the, like, twelve people in America who actually loved this show. While some people complain how the addition of Ron Silver as Alec destroyed the show, for me, it made it so much better. The fake-British guy from Season 1 was just annoying and the chemistry between Ronnie and Alec was amazing, in my opinion. Sure, the whole "will they or won't they" dilemma was played out for a while, but it worked. When Alec was killed and they brought in June, I was expecting a MAJOR shark jump...but it didn't happen. Yes, June was annoying, but she did provide for some hilarious situations. In fact, the lines I occasionally quote are from the third season: "Yes, that's exactly what I did, I said, 'Run, Alec! Run to the bimbo!'" and, "I can't find the words to describe how I feel...baaad." (note: I know I didn't get these lines word for word, it's been a while since I saw the show) I always watched the reruns on USA, but I'm sad to say, I rarely find them anymore. I want to see the last episodes that NBC never aired!
I really feel sorry for poor Kirstie Alley. This show really blew donkeys and she was never funny on Cheers. Now she's reduced to doing stupid hair color commercials. But guys - I can't believe no one here has mentioned her first, best acting role! Have you all forgotten Lt. Savek from Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan?
Wow... I just realized that Kirstie Alley is a man.
This show, like Rosie O'Donnell, never should have come out of the closet!!
Sorry cookie-cutter chick sitcom. Waste of Wallace Langham and Kathy Najimy. I think giving Kirstie Alley a starring vehicle is pretty misguided, her whininess isnt easy to take undiluted. I used to watch it because like many people, i either was too lazy or couldnt find anything to do between Seinfeld and ER.
This show was funny till the addition of Ron Silver. How ANYONE can think he is funny, attractive or anything but gross is beyond me. He mucked up Rhoda and he mucked this up too. Like Ron Rifkin (Bonnie Franklin's Love interest in One Day At A Time) the show took a jump BACK when they killed him off. June was cool character that brought back a lot of good tension. She was dumb but often we saw she wasn't so dumb. She would often use her dumbness to outwit Veronica. Dan Cortese was hot and him and that other fellow were good as a buddy team. The gay or not gay thing went on too long but the show jumped again by making him gay. It would have been MUCH funnier if he was straight. Did I mention Dan Cortese was hot. He did take his shirt off in one episode. Do a GOOGLE search in the image section.
Kirstie Alley was funny on "Cheers". She was so not funny on "Veronica's Closet". "Veronica's Closet" JTS from day one. The only person I thought was remotely funny was Kathy Najimi. Just because Kirstie was funny as a part of an ensemble cast like "Cheers" didn't mean that she could be funny as a leading lady of her own sitcom. The late Phil Hartman knew he would be better off in a smaller role when he went from SNL to "Newsradio". Too bad Kirstie didn't take his lead.

I loved the show, however the 3rd season was not very good and Josh should have never came out. They should have done that in maybe the last few episodes. The jokes around Josh possibly being gay were hilarious.

Was the constant switching in protagonists, the shows downfall so to speak? First, Holland Taylor becomes Ronnie's partner, and then they write her off as having died and her son takes over.

Then in Season 2, they add Ron Silver as the father of the son who takes over. He also becomes a romantic interest only for him to be written out as having died and his secret wife takes over in Season 3, some ditzy blonde.

So basically, while supporting cast and stories were good, the main plot was all over the place and became disjointed.
