Question Bosom Buddies Boned the Fish When...

http://www.bonethefish.com/viewtopics.php?2024

Quote:
Bosom Buddies was an sitcom which ran from 1980 to 1982 on ABC. The premise was two men disguise themselves as women in order to live in the women-only Susan B. Anthony Hotel, after their own apartment is demolished, because of the dirt cheap rent. Kip Wilson (Tom Hanks) is originally skeptical of the plan, but after meeting knock-out resident model/dancer/nurse Sonny Lumet (Donna Dixon), he ends up convincing aspiring writer Henry Desmond (Peter Scolari) that the experience will make a great book.

Never BTF. The show got even better in Season 2 when they stopped wearing dresses so much which was a silly concept to begin with. Tom and Peter were such a great comedy duo who were much better and funnier when they could just be themselves.

I don't think it ever really JTS. Hanks and Scolari were great. I think they should have stayed with the original premise for longer though.

  • Other Thoughts:

When the girls catch on the premise dies.
    Episode #1
Of course, this show jumped when Kip and Henry revealed that they were, in fact, not Buffy and Hilary's BROTHERS, but masquerading as women (so sexist) so that they could live in the silly little Susan B. Anthony-pre-feminist all-women joint. (As if!) Also, even more ridiculous when Kip started dating Sunny. It started getting incestuous, somehow. That's it.
Jumped when the girls caught on. The whole premise was shaky. Worked great as a movie in Some Like It Hot, but to make it last four years? Hard to believe this was Tom Hanks' start. Bet he wishes he could forget this one.
I look better in a dress than Peter Scolari any day.
Bosom Buddies ran for only 2 seasons, not for 4.
It's still hard to believe that Tom Hanks started his career in this silly show. Actually, it's hard to believe how many excellent actors (Robin Williams, John Travolta, etc) started off in silly 70s-80s sitcoms.
    Donna Dixon....
I want to vote Day one so bad, but the show was kind of enjoyable until the girls figured out that the guys were not girls.
the day that Tom Hanks put on a bra---makeup---high heels---IT ALL JUMPED!!!
Bosom Buddies never got the chance to jump the shark. It was funny until the last episode!! C'mon! Ruth Dunbar was hilarious and even though Donna Dixon doesn't possess an ounce of acting ability, I think she kept the male population tuned in. The supporting cast are what really made the show work. Amy, Isabel, even the old woman working the front desk at the Susan B. was funny. My favorite episode was when Henry & Kip get stuck in that cabin..."do you HAVE any CANDYBARS?!?!" Classic..too too funny. I have taped every episode and still watch them when I need a good laugh. Bosom Buddies is the reason why I love Tom Hanks. He made a show like Bosom Buddies work - the man is a fabulous actor.
To the previous poster - Man, you gotta get out more.
I can't believe that this many people actually watched this show - I must admit that I found it particularly funny. Unfortunately the entire concept of it was destined to be short-lived. By the way, MY favorite episode was when Hildie & Buffy go to the singles bar and don't get hit on by any men. God, maybe I need to get out more!
    Hildy was hot!!
When they decided to tell everyone that they were really men and not their own cousins.
When all the girls found out their secret, they should have ended the series. I still think it's kind of funny, it shows up on Sunday afternoons when football runs late or ends early. It's silly, and never could have lasted that long anyway. There are worse shows. I always loved the opening credits when Scolari throws the oranges up and Hanks catched them in the grocery bag. Those crazy bosom buddies! Too bad they never use the Billy Joel theme song in syndication.
What an original show, until the guys got found out.
This jumped when that fat, no talent cow...Amy Jo Sperber kept trying to get Henry (Scolari) into the sack!! As if he would ever be attracted to the big fatty!!!! Ironic enough...the only other role I saw her in was in Tom Hanks' Bachelor Party....she can't even get parts on her own!! By the way....was it me..or was it hilarious when Henry kept dancing at the reunion with the deaf woman??? And Kip joined in with the hot blond. Of course...everybody else joined in..like that would ever happen!! Quick question....did Kip ever finally get that blond. Sonny in the sack???? I mean...she bangs Ackroyd in real life.....how bad could it be with Kip-a-roo????
This show never jumped. In fact to go one step further, it was and will remain the funniest sitcom ever and i mean ever made!
When the girls all found out that the guys were guys, something just went out of the show. It was never as clever or funny ever again. Tom Hanks was a stand-out even then, though!
Never did! It was only a starting point for Tom and Peter. Kind of low, but you gotta start somewhere. I was walking through the drugstore one day and the theme song was playing and I thanked the Heaven's above for having been adorned with such a wonderful show and song! You don't know what you got till it's gone. *Sniff* RIP girls!
The first episode was a CLASSIC, shot on film and written by Chris Thompson. Even though it was directed by Joel "BadTV" Zwick, the pilot was excellent; by episode #2, they had switched to videotape and Thompson's involvement was on the decline. That's when this devolved into a silly sex-farce.
I loved this show in high school when it came out. Just the fact that Kip and Henry made up the others names as women, Buffy and Hildegard, was hilarious. I could totally see Amy running after Henry, that's how they got into the apartment to begin with - she was their co-worker and she thought she could win Henry over by helping them. Besides, how many guys really have women like Sunny after them, hmm? One of my fav. episodes that I still quote is the one where their boss, Ruth Dunbar, invites Kip and Henry over to her place. They bring her a kitten as a gift and she forces them to stay - they keep trying to leave and all these things keep happening. Finally they're playing the bongo's and singing "The Banana Boat Song" and it went like this "midnight comes and WE WANNA GO HOME" - ha ha! Tom Hanks was great.
This show jumped when their secret identities were revealed. I always thought that this was ironic that the show tanked at this point, because I always thought that if they had gone with a different angle with the show, that they were not two men impersonating women to get an apartment but rather just two guys that worked for an ad agency, it would have been far less cheesy. Remember this line: "I made an albino snake!"
Bosom Buddies jumped the shark when Kip and Henry stopped dressing as women. That was the entire PREMISE of the show!!!
My fave moment was when Kip decided to get a tattoo to prove he loved Sonny. The tattoo artist touches Kip with a PEN and kip runs screaming down the street... I laugh just thinking about it.
To the F***head a few comments back who has a problem with Wendy Jo Sperber: you'll be happy to know that, thanks to her contracting cancer and the subsequent chemotherapy treatments, she's lost a whole lot of weight so now you can think of her as a desirable human being! I'm sure it fills her heart with joy that she doesn't have to put up with crap from the likes of people like you any more!
This show never jumped! I remember avoiding this show like the plague because it was on ABC and had an idiotic title. Then my brother saw an episode and told me how great it was (The episode where Henry writes a chapter in a few different styles.) This show was hilarious and also had some really wonderful dramatic moments. Kip telling Sonny how he felt about her when he was worried about the blind patient was great, but even better (and one of my all-time favorite TV episodes ever) was when Henry went to his high school reunion and met the deaf girl he turned down for the prom. Anyone who hates the ending to that episode must go out and kick kittens for fun. Plus that show had a great flashback to their high school days (note the names on the board in the school - P. Scolari, T Hanks, etc.) This show had such a young cast that they could (and did) go to high school flashbacks (and look more believable than Robin Givens ever did) and college and then, for fun, have flash forwards to when they were middle-aged, and in their eighties. I felt terrible about this show being cancelled until I saw Perfect Strangers go into a third and fourth season (and beyond, but by then I had given up on it) and I was glad Bosom Buddies left while it was still great. Yes, I said great. Along with The Odd Couple, it's my favorite show. I just wish I knew what happened to Tom Hanks after this show went off the air - he just seemed to disappear.
Except for WKRP and SOAP, this was the funniest show on TV in that golden age of the late 70's early 80's!! Those who disagree have obviously never seen the show, or were put off by the premise. Tom Hanks, Peter Scolar, Holland Taylor, WendyJo Sperber were classic! One of the sexiest scenes ever on television was when Tom and Sunny were quarreling on the couch and suddenly kissed for the first time. My girlfriend and I still talk about it. We discovered Tom Hanks before the general public found out how great he is. Also, how can you not love him--he's a CLEVELAND INDIANS FAN!
This show never jumped. Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari had such great chemistry together, they made a great team. I actually thought the show got better once their secret was out of the bag. Tom and Peter were so fun to watch together, I think it would have been a great show even if they scrapped the whole cross dressing thing altogether. The episode where they're trapped together in a snowbound cabin without any food was a classic, I at one time had that on tape and watched it over and over, but I accidentally taped over it, big mistake.
This is such a no-brainer. When Buffy and Hildy's real identities were exposed, they should have ended the series. But like a lot of series that jumped the shark, the producers didn't know when to quit. The show simply wasn't funny anymore.
Never really jumped - best episodes - when they were in college "Someday someone will tell me what the HELL a buckeye is", when they are working as candystripers "are you Portuguese, too?" the cabin episode is truly the best- when Kip is violently rocking in the rocking chair - when Henry is arrested for trafficking in stolen goods, and Kip calls the cop Barney Fife - when Kip hits Nixon's limo with a water balloon - the pisode - the high school episode is not at all sappy, it's painfully honest, from Henry's cruel treatment of the deaf girl to Kip's bells and long 'do.
Had too many funny episodes to ever jump. My favorite was when they were in jail and Ernie Hudson guest starred as a tough cell mate who wants to kick their ass. And his name is "Rochelle", so Kip makes some dumb joke about it. Anyway, at some point they convinced him to sing with them and they all do a version of "Do Wa Diddy." I remember loving that one. Plus they were from my hometown, Shaker Heights, Ohio. That was the only time I can remember that we got props on any TV show.
Jumped when Buffy and Hildy's true gender was revealed. What were the producers THINKING? You can't get rid of the original premise of a show that works and expect the show to keep working. That's like saying, well, here we are on Gilligan's Island and civilization has finally found us but you know what? Let's stay here and try to make this our own country and a resort paradise! See, it just doesn't work. As for Tom Hanks, mark my words, that man will one day run for a high public office. He has political ambition as evidenced by his extensive involvement with leadership in the Screen Actor's Guild. The roles he picks (Apollo 13, Philadelphia, Castaway, Forrest Gump) seem deliberately selected to show the best of the human spirit, like building a portfolio of sorts. The man wanted to break into showbiz and he put his whole heart into a role where he had to dress in drag. Good for the young Tom Hanks. But Bossom Buddies will one day be to Tom Hanks as Bedtime For Bonzo was to Ronald Reagan. The show (pre-identity discovery) ages well and is still enjoyable but ACK!!! What were they thinking? Punishment, punishment for the producers who went "off mission" and blew the classified information about Buffy and Hildegard's true identity and messed up something wonderful.
BOSOM BUDDIES never jumped! The show only got better as it went along. The flashback episodes and the episode where Kip and Henry were stuck in that mountain cabin were hilarious!
This show was brilliant. It was weird to see one of the world's greatest actors(TOM HANKS) start out on a tv show wearing a dress and having a name like BUFFY. I wish I knew why it was cancelled so soon because for a couple of reasons (1)Everybody seemed to like it. (2)It was one of the highest rated shows of the 80'S (3)It made the actors stars (4)I believe it won Emmys. So, for those reasons, why was it cancelled so soon? I might never find out. NEVER JUMPED!!!!!!!!!!!!
No question. Bosom Buddies jumped the shark when the boys left Livingston, Gentry, Mishkin and started their own ad production company.
Oy, try watching this show in syndication with the lame ditty that has replaced Billy Joel's "My Life" at the beginning. They retroactively killed this show back to Episode 1.
I don't see anything wrong with sentimentality, the lack of it might be the reason that a lot of newer shows aren't making much of an impression, but damn, this show had to drown us in it. This had some real promise, Tom and Peter were great together, and I always enjoyed Holland Taylor as their boss(and later, partner), but like any other show associated with Miller/Boyett, they always have to take the last five or so minutes to explain that there was a moral behind it all.. Why??? As I said above, I see nothing wrong with a sitcom occasionally giving a tug to the heartstrings(Taxi, Cheers in the early years, and MTM did this well); but, with the majority of BB episodes, I can't help but jump ahead in my mind, and think of later Miller/Boyett projects like "Full House", it used the exact same formula. So, because of this being incorporated into just about every episode, and how sappily(for the most part) it was done, I would say the show jumped, but still deserved better than it got. It could be funny, and sometimes the "moral of the story is" method even worked; like with the "How Great Thou Art", and "Macho Man" episodes, to name a couple. I don't really believe the show even needed the "dressing up" plot to work, Tom and Peter were funny enough, and I guess the producers were attempting to break away from that plot during season two, but it all happened too fast, and other things were working against it as well. It's hard to believe it only made it for two seasons, while a show like "Laverne & Shirley" made it for eight.. Oh well, I guess this one didn't have something as big as the original shark jumper "Happy Days", to carry it..
Although the only thing I remember about this show is the time the boss lady told Peter Scolari that she hadn't seen a chest like his since she stopped being a den mother for the boy scouts, I do remember enjoying the show until the mystery was revealed. After that, the whole show seemed pointless. I guess it could only go for so long. But I don't think Tom Hanks should be embarrassed by it. Was no more embarrassing than Bachelor Party.
Right after this great show went off the air, Hanks did BACHELOR PARTY, then hit it big in BIG. Scolari went on to do Bob Newhart--speaking in alteration, constantly. HILARIOUS. Memo to Tom Hanks, PLEASE by our beloved Indians--the new owner is making a shambles of it!
Never jumped. The "two guys in drag" situation seemed a pale Three's Company imitation at first, but the show's sharp, hip dialogue and rapid-fire jokes sounded nothing like the 70s sitcoms. Hanks and Scolari played off each other very well.
Signs you know a show has jumped the shark: 1) if it shows the two male leads doing extravagant things in the opening credits; 2) if the opening credits have the words Miller and Boyette; 3) if you realize this show had Telma Hopkins before she starred in the atrocity that would become Family Matters; 4) if, in the episode you are watching, the episode has a dentist that does not care about his wife; 5) if their problems are resolved with Tom Hanks admitting that he's been living in a hotel for WOMEN (which should have closed down way before this show aired) in drag to get closer to his girlfriend. Jump.
This show jumped from its inception. Could anyone not tell they were two men in drag?! That was so obvious it blew the show for me. (FTR, I didn't enjoy Some Like It Hot for the same reason.) At least get actors who could pass as women.
I still laugh thinking about Kip and Henry stranded in a cabin with only non-dairy creamer! Is there anything funnier than Kip with a hang-over?
Definitely jumped when Telma Hopkins, Wendi Jo Sperber and Donna Dixon found out the girls were really boys. But didn't everyone think Peter Scolari was going to be the breakout star? Who was that other guy anyway?
It could have jumped when they left the ad agency, but then they did episodes like the one with "Bite the Big Apple" and my faith in Kip & Henry/Buffy & Hildy was held in tact. I enjoy the show so much that when I get my first tattoo next week, I am having a "love dot" added on my shoulder!
Bosom Buddies jumped when Kip & Henry went into business with themselves and Ruth, their old boss. Although it was short lived, I thought it was great...Tom Hanks & Peter Scolari made a great team - I thought...of course I was about 12 at the time - so...
Never, a million times, never! This show was funny, funny, funny, funny (think Kip saying, Sunny etc.) Actually got better when they "came out." How could anyone forget the moment Kip revealed himself to Sunny? Or the tenderness of Henry Desmond, Macho Man. He is the one who made us believe we were all worthy. (Think Joe Regalubutto, tick tock and offering Ruth $2. Not half enough, snaps Henry. Gotta love him. The chemistry between Hanks and Scolari was magical, and the talent borne out in the very successful careers they went on to. Wendy Jo Sperber's Amy was someone we all could love, and Holland Taylor, bravo. (Wendy, you were great in that movie, I Want To Hold Your Hand.) Makes me laugh so hard I hurt after.
When the guys came out of the closet and let EVERYBODY know their big secret, the writers threw the show's main premise out the window.
Ruth Dunbar is probably the funniest boss around. She is a wildly entertaining character, yet, she's only on screen for like 10% of the time. Except for the episode when Kip and Henry go to eat dinner with her and she forces them to sing "daylight come and me wan' go home" while she plays guitar, they never really had a good amount of her. They should have made more episodes with her vast presence.
Ok.. this show was weird.. like someone could not tell it was two guys in drag.. and you never saw the brothers and sister together. Changing in a manhole on the street. Ok.. before someone says lighten up, yada yada yadda...... This was not comedy, it was dumb dumb. For the person who commented on Wendy Jo Sperber being fat.. you are an idiot, go look in the mirror and judge that person. The opening song was one of Billy Joels' best. I used to listen to the opening then change the channel. In closing, one thing that would have made this show real funny was in Kip? (Tom Hanks) finally got the blonde in the sack and found out she was a he... yes, a big penis. (Blondie there dressed up a woman also).. That would be the last show as Kip would scream out loud.. That would be the final scene...
Premise, shemise. The flimsy premise of this show wasn't the point. The ad-libbed bits between Hanks and Scolari rank even today as some of the funniest ever on TV. Never jumped, never jumped. Never...jumped.
Actually from the moment someone threw it out in a martini-laden lunchtime brainstorm session at the network. OK, it's supposed to be fiction, and silly etc. But NO ONE not even the dolts in TV Land, would believe for a second that these two weren't really men in drag. The only place they could afford was a women's apartment building? Please. The girls were incredibly annoying, and I think Donna Dixon's character may have been stupid enough to fall for it after all. The Plots? What plots? This makes Gilligan's Island look like something on the Science Channel.
You either got this show or you didn't. If you didn't, you let the premise scare you away too soon. It wasn't about men in drag--actually, it was about the relationships and character development between Hanks and Scolari, Scolari and Wendy Jo, and that chick from Tony Orlando and Dawn and Donna Douglas. Few people know that the network wanted to cancel this classic show after the first season, but a groundswell of fanatic wrote the network and saved it. Thanks to the TV gods. PLUS, TOM HANKS IS A HUGE TRIBE FAN! GREAT SHOW!
BOSOM BUDDIES was an extremely funny sitcom based on a clever premise and had some decent scripting and a competent cast for the most part. I don't think the show was on long enough to really jump the shark but there were a hiccup or two along the way. Once the girls found out about what Kip and Henry were doing and they stopped dressing like women, a lot of the fun of the show drained away and the show was reduced to watching Tom Hanks drool over Donna Dixon. The show was fun though while it was on. Hanks and Scolari were wonderful together and received strong support from Holland Taylor as Ruth and the fabulous Wendie Jo Sperber as Amy.
I have to admit when the women found out that Buffy and Hildy were really guys, the show lost alot of its appeal. The other jump I thought was when the African-American character (I forgot her name) took over the management of the hotel. I thought it was funny fooling the old lady. The episode that I remember the best was when Kip was dating Sonny and he cheated on her with another blonde. The surprise was that Sonny said it was OK for him to see other women because she was not sure how she felt about him. This episode showed how stupid Kip was (like some men) have a absolutely beautiful girlfriend/wife but they cheat on her anyway. They should thank the Almighty that a beautiful woman like Sonny would allow them in the same room and breathe her air. After that episode, Kip tried to win Sonny back but he never did. So learn a lesson guys, if you have a beautiful woman, be good to her because she may have doubts about your relationship and the cheating will just assure her that she is with the wrong guy and she will say, "Bye, Bye!"
Holland Taylor and the late Wendie Jo Sperber were the best parts of this show. As with all "hook" shows, when the secret is out or the characters marry, the show's over. Let's face it, even Stevie Wonder could see these were guys in drag.
