- Other Thoughts:
Martin jumped the shark when the whole sexual harassment thing blew up. To get the actress who played Gina, they actually shot them separate.
I don't know how this show got onto the air! True, it did have some laughs, but it was just plain stupid. The whole sexual harassment thing in real life just made it even worse. The show shouldn't have been put onto the air.
It got just too damn silly
MAD TV's skit parodying Martin, with Martin turned into Martin Luther King and Gina as Corretta King was one of the funniest sketches I've ever seen. So easy to write, yet so funny (e.g., "Damn Coretta! My speech is tomorrow and I can't think of a thing, girl!")
WHEN GINA LEFT THE SHOW BECAUSE HER HUSBAND WAS JEALOUS OF MARTIN AND HER KISSING. DUUUUUHHH! IT IS TV! I THINK GINA'S HUSBAND IS TOO POSSESSIVE!
Martin Lawrence's portrayal of his character in this awful show does more damage to the Black man in America than a 1000 KKK rallies. The only good thing about this show were Martin's girlfriend and her friend- they were easily two of the sexiest women on any sitcom. Whatever idiot writer made the friend a constant foil for Martin's "She's ugly" jokes must have pretty strange taste in women.
When some woman stopped by his apartment, gave birth and the baby flew around the room. That was it for me. I had tolerated a lot of the silliness to that point- but I never watched again.
This show was funny. You know, something to watch if nothing else was on that was better. This show jumped the shark when Martin married that big ass girl with the even bigger head! Gina! She was very annoying. They should have killed her off the show. It jumped the shark once more when in real life the character of Gina got married to some fool who had her screwing up the show of Martin. She was only on the show because of her body. She had no talent whatsoever. Martin should have hooked up with Pam and dissing Gina. He had a lot more of material to work with because of her big ass head.
When Martin became psycho in real life and was trying to control Tisha Campbell. That's why Tisha left the show (Gina).
When Gina and Martin got married, then he started gettin' high on the set and feeling and groping Gina like they were really married. Also, too many jokes about fine-ass Pam, she had too much ass for him to say the same stale jokes. Also, the jokes themselves were getting too buffoonish and stupid.
When Martin Lawrence's personal life became destructive and Gina left the show. What used to be a hilarious and original TV show became old, dry and stale. The writers relied too much on Pam and Martin insults and they brought in Cole's overly dumb girlfriend. Martin, himself, wasn't as energetic as he was in the first seasons and you could tell he wanted to quit the show. The last episode was a HUGE disappointment. What a shame!
When Martin gave up his job as a DJ at the radio station in Detroit to work on television. Show seemed to lose its identity at that point.
Never jumped!!!! Martin has to be one of the funniest actors ever to have a show. Gina was a little annoying, yes, but Martin made up for it with the crazy characters he played on the show i.e. Otis the security guard, Indiana Bob, Shenaynay, Momma Payne, and of course my favorite Jerome. Pam was a bonus on the show. Probably wouldn't have been as successful without her and Martin going back and forth all the time. Cole was way to stupid but tommie was a cool mo/fo. And the whole Martin sexually harassing Tisha (Gina) and all that I think it was blown way out of proportion. She got married and all of the sudden she's getting harassed...come on now! Overall best comedy on TV during it's time!
martin had to have jumped the shark when him and gina got married. he just wasn't the same. and why did pam stop coming around? she was the best damn thing that happened to that show with all the martin short jokes. and what happened to bro-man? that man was an unsung genius, i would have liked to have seen more of him.
THIS SHOW IS THE MOST UN-FUNNY THING THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. MY BOYFRIEND IS A CRO-MAGNUM MORON WHO FORCES ME TO WATCH THIS SHOW EVERY NIGHT. IT HAS NEVER SO MUCH AS GOTTEN A CHUCKLE OUT OF ME. THIS SHOW GENUINELY BLOWS!
This show took a dive when Tisha Campbell (Gina) refused to do scenes with Martin Lawrence. They had to always have her out of town and talking to him by telephone. Her reason was that she claimed Lawrence sexually harassed her. They had a really funny hands on type of chemistry. So when they were never seen on camera together the funniness was over.
Day One. Martin Lawrence has NEVER made me laugh and this show was about the silliest, most inane piece of trash ever to be foisted upon the American viewing public.
Day one, Another in a long line of "ethnic" comedies in which the dialogue is unintelligible and not funny in the slightest. Shows like this thrive(d), while Ben Stiller Show, SCTV, Dana Carvey Show, etc., get the ax...
Martin should have NEVER married Gina. She was always a bitch and I'm truly surprised that Damon Wayans is working with her, now. She doesn't have a very good track record. The ending sucked, too. ALL TISHA CAMPBELL'S FAULT!!! Martin should have just killed her off. Everybody else was getting along just fine- Despite Lawrence's personal problems.
Martin was, and still is hilarious!!! Many of his sayings such as, "YOU GO BOY/GIRL", AND "TALK TO THE HAND" were uesd in shows like Seinfield, Freinds, and a wole host of others. I will admit, it did get a little lame when they couldn't shoot Martin and Gina in the same scene, but it still was damn funny. As for it being degrading to minorities, please! It's a TV show, stop taking it so serious. Have a coke and a smile, and shut the bleep up.
When Tisha Campbell left the show and Martin's show became centered around the supporting cast in particular the character of Pam, which sucked.
Undeveloped love story between Martin and Shenanae. These two should have had at least one drunken one-night stand.!!
This show was DA BOMB up until Gina left, when she left the show lost the spunk it had. This is one of my favorite shows, but I’m glad it ended when it did because I think it was time to end it.
The whole Martin on a journey, not on screen with his lady thing was entirely unnecessary. Pam could have stepped in, (both she and Tisha were HOT), and they could have avoided death. There was not nearly enough Bruh Man/ Martin stuff either.
This Show Never Jumped. Oh, by the way, PERHAPS IF YOU blew, YOUR CRO-MAG BOYFRIEND WOULDN'T HAVE CHOSEN A T.V. SHOW INSTEAD OF RESPECTING YOUR FEELINGS.
When Tisha Campbell accused him of sexual harassment and they had to shoot separate scenes, then the show went downhill. Plus the jokes on Pam were getting tired, tired tired. And after Pam and Tommy broke up (yes they hooked up), then it got tired
Martin was too damn funny. And for all ya'll that didn't like the show are some lame ass (BLEEP)(BLEEP). Damn Haters, know ya'll couldn't keep your own sitcom running for 5 years with good ratings.
Well, when Martin and Gina moved to LA. But I am still pissed that before the show went off the air...WHAT THE HELL KIND OF JOB DID TOMMY WORK??????? he was dressing too fine to not have a job!
I want to say this show jumped with the 4th season's finale - that stupid one hour (two parter?) suitcase episode but instead it jumped during the 5th season when Tisha Campbell walked. It was so sad to see such a funny show sour; Campbell and Lawrence had such good chemistry, but I knew this show couldn't recover as long as they didn't share anymore scenes together. Anyways, I did miss Stan and Sean. I guess after Garrett Morris got shot in real life, he quit the show (?) - which brings me to season three, the best year in this viewer's opinion. Such classics as Martin coming back from his "journey"; Martin inadvertently hooking up Pam and Tommy; the episode where Martin and Gina move in together (check out Martin getting his groove on); the one with Martin's alleged illegitimate son and so forth.
As I said in an earlier post, Tisha Campbell and her husband Duane Martin needs to announce their acting retirement.
The jokes had played out by Season Two. Garrett Morris was the only reason I watched and once he left, so did I. And by the way, a free Lion's Club Membership to anyone who thought Tisha Campbell was fine.
Martin was a funny show and although it often got silly, they crossed the line on SEVERAL occasions (the episode with the woman giving birth- STUPID!) By the last season, it just became too embarrassing to watch.
I remember reading in a book that one of Martin Lawrerence's influences was Jimmy "J.J." Walker from, of course, Good Times. I really think that "Martin" is also influenced by Good Times. First of all, there are the running gags on Good Times: Thelma's bad cooking, J.J.'s catchphrases and girlfriends, everyone calling Bookman "Buffalo Butt" around the fifth season, Bookman's alleged eating problems. On "Martin," you have Martin always calling Pam ugly, the constant jokes about Pam's breath, Cole never having a job, the regular (forgot his character name or confused him with Cole) that always lived with his mother and his girlfriend in later episodes, and so on. Also on Good Times you have some of the most cliched characters: Sweet Daddy the pimp, Lenny the hustler, the woman who would cry over anything, Willona the gossip, J.J. and his catchphrases, Penny the abused orphan turned smartass turned placid child. On Martin, there's Jerome who always sings with a costumed Gina and Pam "Don't You Know No Good", Shennaynay (or whatever her name is) the bitchy hairdresser, the security guard with the bad teeth, the kung-fu expert, Roscoe the annoying kid who is almost Penny's counterpart except he seems like he's making fun of short people (There was an episode in which they did hire short people to occupy a bar. How ironic!), Gina's mother with Martin's mustache, and so on. I hate to say this, but when I discovered how similar Good Times is to "Martin," that made me consider this as a shark jump no matter how good or bad the series was in the days when FOX still aired "Living Single" and "In Living Color."
The show jumped when Tisah Campbell (Gina) left the show. It seemed kind of silly watching Martin, Tommy, Cole, and Pam act like everything was fine without Gina. Gina was either on the phone in a separate scene... in one episode, I think they had another actress playing Gina, sitting on the couch in the dark. But anyway, the show sucked because the viewers missed the chemistry between Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell, and they show was focused more on the supporting cast (Pam, Tommy, and Cole). I don't know what happened with the sexual harassment thing. I can't judge, because I wasn't there. But it's a shame that a great sitcom, like Martin went stale so quickly and then off the air. "Martin" was my show.
For everyone saying Martin was too silly, Martin is silly, period. He is a living breathing cartoon character. If you've seen his HBO live show, "You So Crazy!", you can see he's just a hyper active goofball. His comedy isn't deep or hard hitting or political, it's jokes about "washin' ya ass" and "chillin' and jackin' off" and doing silly impressions. So if that's not your cup of tea, DON'T WATCH! Martin is and alway's will be one of my favorite sitcoms ever, because I realize it is not just a sitcom, it is a live action cartoon show, like the Three Stooges. And on cartoon shows you expect giant sized rats and flying babies and four story snow blizzards and killer toenails and clumsy waiters and sandpaper bunyuns and, tee hee, haunted apartment complexes. Another thing is they had a good reason for musical guest stars, since he was a detroit DJ. Unlike other shows where the guest stars tour bus just happened to break down in the suburbs. As for Pam and Martin romance, does nobody remember the episode where they both dreamed about making sweet love to each other, then murdering each other afterward. (If you don't remember, it's not as morbid as you think, they just drop 16 tons on each other, like a cartoon show) The actual Martin Lawrence did jump his own shark, however. He's started acting like Martin Payne in his movies. In "House Party","Bad Boys",and "Thin Line/Love/Hate" he was actually acting, but in "Big Mamas House","Worst Could Happen",and,(groans, dry heaves),"Black Knight",(vomits, wipes mouth, dry heaves)he was just a rip-off of Martin Payne. I'm sad to see him go.
The show jumped the shark when Martin and Gina got married. The characters that made the show funny werent on as much and shortly afterward Gina stopped showing up due to the pending sexual harassment case.
This show is a comedy, it's supposed to be silly. Although it did get kind of stupid after Gina left, I still thought it was hilarious. One of the funniest episodes, "GINA, THAT AIN'T NO DAMNED PUPPY." Even though Kohl was stupid, I liked his character. You have to take the show for what it is, every show can't be a commentary on social issues. Some of them have to be shows where you just act a fool.
Marty Marl!! Hey ,as a professional African American man, Martin was ghetto! He never denied it, and it was plain to see. That was his schtick. Gina was a whole lot more educated and professional than he was, but she stayed with him anyway...Why, my wife and I had no idea. I'd hate to believe they were commenting on the lack of decent black men available, and that a woman like her had no choice but to date this buffoon. I'd like to think they kept them together despite their culture and educational differences because he truly loved her. But it was a funny show until the off screen nonsense kicked in, and it was a shame, because the on screen chemistry between him and Gina was there. He was ghetto, but he loved his woman and was not afraid ot say so.. Now keeping in mind it was a Fox sitcom, Cole was a truly throwaway character. They should have tossed him and gave "Bruthaman from the fif flo" more airtime. The high point of this series? When Pam was hypnotized into being Martin! Her dead-on impersonation was hilarious! And anything Pam wore usually kept me glued to the set! Even when Martin joined the cult and then came back didnt kill the show. They didnt suddenly adopt a kid (a true death knell), Ted McGinley didnt show up as the tv station boss, nor did the wedding really kill the show. Martin's off screen schizophrenia spilled over to the set, and they quickly had to pull the plug. Can you remember him gettin his groove on one more time before the wedding ceremony? He contributed more mid 90's catch phrases than any other show. A role model? Absolutely not. In fact, if his character had been just a but more self depreciating (like Seinfeld), he would have been funnier. But what killed the show for me was Martin Payne was just downright mean at times, and thats not funny.
The show never really jumped, if the only time it did was when in reality, there was sexual harassment on the set between Martin and Tisha (gina)capmbell. On the real there was a fight that broke out on the set between her husband(duanae martin) and martin. So the only way the show and the producers can save face from all of the media knowing about it was to have Gina go on long business trips and what the hell happened when they got married, Pam and Bro'man stopped coming around and am i the only one to notice this in all of the years that show show has been on we have never seen Tommy's house, we know for damn sure that he ain't got no job but damn, he aint got no house either, for god sake we even saw Cole's broke-down-ass apartment. but the show quit when they knew it would and the last episode went out with a bang and with most of the cast saving face. Martin became the biggest star of them all starring in movies with big box office numbers, Gina is on another show playing as Damon Wayan's wife, Pam was with Martin again in Big Momma's house, Tommy and Cole are doing stageplays like Lord I need a man types. Martin is the one of the best comedians ever period!!!!!!!!!!
The series "Martin" featured what I feel to be one of the greatest examples of TV chemistry between an actor and actress playing a couple. Martin Lawrence & Tisha Campbell were incredible together, to the extent that one could believe their characters would actually be together in real life (unlike on "Friends" for example where the only way Ross would get Rachel would be if he stalked her.) Martin & Gina covered all the bases that comprise a real relationship: sexual attraction, co-dependency, possessiveness, playful teasing, etc. A couple that got on each other's nerves from time to time but were inseparable. That chemistry brought out the comedic brilliance of the show's early years, as Martin and Gina could make fun of each other, but God forbid anyone else made fun of them because they had each other's back. Once the off-screen rift between Lawrence and Campbell developed, the vibe on the show changed drastically. Martin was no longer the out of control comedian whose ego was as big as his love for his girl; rather he became a quiet and un-assuming character whose criticisms became less playful and more malicious in mood. Gina was no longer the...well, she was no longer period, her existence relegated to phone calls where we had to assume she was on the othe line or short scenes explaining her whereabouts to the audience. The series should have ended immediately after this "separation," but the producers, most likely in an attempt to keep one of the few comedies based around African-Americans alive, decided to force the storyline with "Three's Company" styled situations involving the remaining cast (note to producers: a character should not be spending more time with his wife's best friend than his actual wife. Might give off the wrong impression if you know what I mean.) In closing, "Martin" in it's prime was a great show with just the right balance of physical comedy and one-liners. It showed off the diverse comedic talents of Martin Lawrence, and gave us a television couple that was as believable as they were entertaining. Unfortunately, personal issues interfered and left us with a show that ran for a year longer than it should have. I guess all good things must come to an end...but this ending was truly hard to swallow. P.S. - I always credited Martin Lawrence for the chemistry between him and Tisha Campbell, but watching the great chemistry Mrs. Campbell has with Damon Wayans on the show "My Wife & Kids" is making me believe that perhaps SHE was the glue that held it all together.
After Stan (the program director of Martin's radio show) left, the entire show just got more stupid than funny.
This show was horrible from the beginning. It did nothing but perpetuate stereotypes of Black people in America. I never once laughed at ANY episode of this program.
The show jumped to shark when Gina (Tisha Campbell) accused Martin of sexual harassment (which I don't believe might I add). All together is was absolutely THE BEST T.V. SHOW that ever aired. I wish I had all the shows on VHS for my viewing pleasure.
This show jumped when Gina left. The producers dropped the ball by not letting Martin and Pam "hook up" after Gina left. DAY-um, T'CHINA ARNOLD WUZ FOINE!!!!!! What an ASS!!!! And I mean that in it's most literal sense!!!! I don't miss Martin, but I sho' miss PAM!!!
This show was over before it was even thought of. Martin is annoying as hell. When he talks all high-pitched and off key I want to puke. One minute the show is serious, the next thing you know he wheezing and sputtering around like Jerry Lewis. To make Martin look somewhat intelligent they got two guys to act even more ******** than him. The day I watch Martin again, is the same day I go out and rent Bluestreak......NEVER!!!
Day One, but the supporting cast almost made this show watchable. From Tommy to Pam they were all troopers, especially Gina. With a different lead at the head of this ensemble, it could've been a great show. Unfortunately, what we had was MARTIN FREAKIN' LAWRENCE! It boggles my mind that this awful, unfunny actor (not to mention, if you believe the rumors, a sub-par human being) has had the success he has. Martin and his repartee of equally annoying characters was one of the worst things ever to grace television. But he was surrounded by a great cast, so instead of a short failure we got several seasons of hit and miss comedy that spawned Lawrence's later success. And while he's making millions doing terrible movies, Gia Cambell is relegated to ABC sitcom purgatory. There's something deeply screwed up with the universe
This show jumped when Martin became like Eddie Murphy. Arrogant, thinking he could do all those stupid characters by himself and keep the show going. When he did the mechanic with the big stomach singing some stupid song it was over for me. I was already cheating on Martin with Seinfeld but that absolutely put the nail in the coffin. The guy just became to damn silly and arrogant. And oh yea, Friends is a rip off.
Ol' Marty Mar!!! This is one of my favorites of all time! If you never grew up in the hip-hop culture, you aren't going to get it! Martin is one of the funniest comedians and his work on this sitcom shows all the talents he had as far as playing different characters and the physical acting he did. He invented the catchphrases "You GO, girl" and "Talk to the hand!" The show definitely jumped in the last two to three seasons when Martin had a strange "I'm high" look on his face (around the time Martin's movie "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate" came out). Horrible ending to this sitcom, by the way. The cast was solid, with everyone playing their roles perfectly. Sharks were doing cartwheels on this show in the last episodes when we saw way too much airtime given to Pam; then again, what else can they do when Tisha Campbell (Martin's girlfriend, Gina) refused to work on the show? Tisha went on to Damon's show ("My Wife and Kids"); the actress who played Pam was in "Big Momma's House" and I haven't seen her since; the actor who played Cole is somewhat of a regular on "George Lopez"; and the actor who played Tommy has been in various films (I always thought he looked gay and had feminine gestures on "Martin"); and Martin, well, we all know Martin is a big star in Hollywood (yeah right, he plays "himself" in ALL of his films!). On a side note: has anyone except me noticed that Martin's jawline has blown up where he resembles a chipmunk now? I heard he was a health nut (he even came close to death because of it) but what kind of freakin' exercise is he doing to himself that the sides of his face are growing as opposed to his skinny ass frame of a body? Martin, get help, dog! You are a funny, funny guy but now your face is getting the butt of the jokes!
Martin never jumped the shark are you kidding. This was classic sitcom tv at its best. Many african americans identified with this show because the characters were reminders of people that they know. Bruhman sneaking through the window with his slow walking even slower talkin ass that was pure genius. Or what about hustleman trying to sell chicken on a stick while a blizzard was happening. For us fellas Gina was sexy as hell and in websters dictionary under the word thick they should have a picture of Pam in her martin hey day. **** the only thing that would lend me to vote it jumped was when Pam lost all that weight and Martin wasnt funny this was the last few episodes. Hey by the way does anyone know where Tommy Strawn works.........WHOA
Martin jumped the shark ever since season 3. The first season was the funniest. The second season the shark was waiting for the jump in the water ever since the baby jumping from the woman into Martin's hands. But from season 3 to the end it all went downhill. Martin went from being ghetto in a funny way to being a complete damn fool. I could never see why he would always insult fine Pam but marry unattractive Gina. It should have been reversed. How many times has Tommy not had a job and Martin has said so? It gets old after a while. By season 4 and 5 the shark had indigestion from jumping the shark with the ridiculous story lines: Gina gets her head stuck in a brass headboard, Martin finding out that he is married to Pam instead of Gina (which is not a bad thing) and the "Thin line between Love and Hate" storyline. Martin should have pulled the plug after season 1 because he went completely stupid afterwards
When Tisha left. Also, when Martin left to join the cult. I hated when Martin stopped doing all those characters. I mean they all were my favorites. Bro Man was funny also. The chemistry between everyone is something you rarely see these days. I couldn't wait to watch Martin every week. I made around 3 VHS tapes of just MARTIN SHOWS. I'm so glad I did. DA' BEST SHOW!!!!!
This show was very funny. Not very politically correct. Or the kind of comedy that would appeal to a lot of people but it was a very funny show. To me during my short 22 years Martin at its best along with living color at its best were the funniest shows on tv. Unfortunately once Martin got more famous from the show he started getting a lot more movie offers. Around this time you could tell Martin was not dedicating as much to the show and the show became corny and formulaic. It was never the same. If you want to date it exactly it was around the time the movie "Bad Boys" came out. Too bad. I still catch some of the classic episodes on reruns every once in a while. My favorite side character was Jerome.
After that, the show seemed to focus on just Martin and Gina instead of the whole crew. Also when the other funny characters such as Brother Man, Hustle Man, Dragonfly Jones, and the other characters Martin played appeared in fewer and fewer episodes.
Why do Weddings seem to ruin a good show? When Martin and gina said their I Do's it just wasn't as funny any more. Plus all that stuff at the end of the series with Tisha Campbell's allegations that Martin abused her, and her only appearing when he was not on screen with her was too much. Plus, I understand that Garrett Morris was shot in real life, but why the hell did they sell the station and Martin get his own TV show? It was just a dumb premise.
I love this show. I'm really tired of reading posts about how the show portrayed African Americans, especially considering the fact that on the Cosby show board people did nothing but complain about how that show didn't portray us right, so here is the fact. African Americans, just like whites and anyone else are a diverse different group of people. Martin portrays the people he knows, Living Single portrayed the people they know. Some of us are ghetto, some are educated, and sometimes the two mix. What about comedy for comedy's sake. Every black show does not have to be commentary on the state of the black community. Martin was very funny and i find it sad that his off screen problems ruined the show. Now, with that said, the show jumped the shark a few times. The first is when Martin and Gina broke up and Martin started dating Lisa from Saved by the Bell, on and off screen. Watching her, who i loved as a child on Martin, talking dirty and seducing him was just awkward and wrong. And when Martin joined the cult, a funny episode, but a definite jump. But the thing that killed me was when they started doing episodes with Pam, Gina, Tommy and one of Martin's characters. And the episode where Gina works with Shanayneh.
The last season of Martin was not that Martin that we were used to for the past five years. Maybe because Martin Lawrence was having personal problems and it affected the show or maybe because Tisha Campbell accused the star of sexual harassment. Whatever the reason was it wasn't the same Martin I watched.
This was one of the funniest shows that I have ever watched. The way Martin took basic things and made them funny was crazy! like the episode when they made fun of "New Jack City" and they all were sitting around the table, I almost lost it. There will never be a show on T.V. that will match the power of this show. It was just real in every since of the word. The relationship Martin and Gina had was true. I don't think people give it the "props" it deserves, it was a T.V. classic. I still watch it at 5:00 a.m on some channel, and I still love it.
Martin was truly a great show, as other's have said Martin and Gina's chemistry was great but the whole cast showed a chemistry that you rarely get in a sitcom. True, when Tisha and the whole harassment thing blew up it should have ended and I hated the coo-coo clock episode the most of all out of the non Tisha shows, it was just horrible. My favorite was when they had Pam's cousin Leonne Lonny Love played by David Allen Grier, it was great and again the chemistry they showed even with the guest was cool. All around non shark jumper in my book.
When Tisha Campbell's character left, thats when the show began to resemble a modern day minstrel show.
The purpose of this jump the shark website is for an individual to give his/her opinion when like the Fonz, characters in a show change and act out of there usual character. This action usually always cause an equal an opposite (of the original theme) reaction. After this point, the show's quality goes downhill further and further till some network doctor pulls the plug. This point on Martin when the quality began a downward spiral was with out a shadow of a doubt was when Stan flees from the I. R. S. and sells WZUP to pay his $20,000 in back taxes. I heard Martin with my own ears in an interview before the series premiere that the show was about a DJ who discusses relationships on the radio while dealing with his own @ home. So you see, the move by Stan changes the premise of the whole show. This episode in really was part 1 of the 2 part season finale. In part 2, you can already see the drop in quality. The laughs from the studio audience are almost non-existent. Martin is completely out of character by selling out to his new country redneck boss. By the end of part 1, Martin is dressed like the Lone Ranger complete with cowboy hat and boots yelling weeehha! Even an appearance by Bra Man (his last appearance by the way) couldn't save the season finale. For season 2 and 3, Martin no longer plays multiple characters, except 1, Elroy the singing mechanic, who just can't get that one song out of his head, Don't you know no good. That was the worst character to keep. Everybody @ my High School loved his multiple characters and would imitate them the next day after every show would air. Without Shananae and company, many lost interest quick. Additional cast members such as Cole's even dumber than him girlfriend, only made the show that much worst. Then Martin's real life nervous breakdown in the third season didn't help. He confused the fantasy of his show marriage with reality and tried to get Tisha Campbell-Martin in the sack for real. This was the harpoon in the shark. This caused her to want to leave the show and Martin decided to just end it. Oh, so sad.
IT HAS BEEN MENTIONED MANY TIMES ALREADY BUT IM AN EXPERT ON THIS SUBJECT AND ITS CLEAR THAT WHEN GINA GOT MARRIED IN REAL LIFE THAT RUINED IT AND WHOEVER CANT SEE THAT WHEN SHE DID GET MARRIED ALL OF A SUDDEN MARTIN HARRASED HER PLEASSSSSSSE... HER REAL LIFE HUSBAND DUANE MARTIN OF ALL THINGS WAS JEALOUS AND ID BE TOO CAUSE IT SURE LOOKED LIKE LAWRENCE AND CAMPBELL REALLY LIKED EACH OTHER IN REAL LIFE WATCH CAREFULLY AND YOULL SEE THE CHEMISTRY.. ITS TOO BAD CAUSE THE SHOW WAS FUNNY JUST TO SHUT OFF YOUR BRAIN AND LET MARTIN BE STUPID YOU KNEW IT GOING IN AND THAT WAS OK ALL THE DUMB JOKES ON PAM AND JUST MARTIN EXAGERRATING EVERYTHING WAS FUNNY HE WAS SO STUPID IT WAS GREAT AND IM A WHITE GUY I KNOW IT DOESNT MATTER BUT IT SEEMS LIKE WHITE PEOPLE JUST DIDNT GET THIS SHOW I TOOK MARTIN FOR WHAT IT WAS A GOOD TIME FOR A HALF HOUR.. THE BEST SHOW EVER WAS CLEARLY SEINFELD BUT FOR WHAT IT WAS MARTIN WAS A GOOD TIME.. NOW GINA DIDNT HAVE HIPS OR A BIG CHEST BUT SHE WAS PRETTY AND HAD A NICE BOOTY TO LOOK AT AND I THINK SHE LIKED MARTIN IN REAL LIFE FOR A LITTLE WHILE I DONT KNOW WHY THEY DIDNT GET INTO A RELATIONSHIP CAUSE THEY SURE HAD SOMETHING AND WHOEVER WATCHED KNEW IT OH WELL LATER PEOPLE
Gina jumped the shark the show didn't. She tried to ruin the show because she overrated herself. Martin is the funniest show ever. I could go on all day about how good this show was. Martin is the funniest comedian ever. Gina should have been replaced. Everybody had something good about their character. She had nothing. You can see her use some off her Gina on My Wife and Kids. Its lame as hell.
Gina killed this show. Martin was the funniest show ever made. To the white poster above seinfeld is the second greatest show. You don't understand black comedian's. Martin was inspired by Richard Pryor, Robin Harris (u probably don't know him) and Red Foxx. You need to get your facts straight. Martin was versatile and could do any kind of comedy. Anybody who says this show was dumb or jumped (other than because of tisha campbell) is a idiot. How could you not say this wasn't the funniest show ever. He joked on all the things the audience wanted a comedian to joke on. The poster way back said martin and pams cracks was boring. That was funny as hell. He is a comedian that's his thing that's what he does it was funny. I really hate when people drink wine and press their necks like martin did STOP HATING. Tisha Campbell did that on "My Wife and Kids" ugh! She is a fat female Ted McGinley. I think Martin should have replaced her with Regina King like they were going to but he had health problems I bet the poster above didn't know that either. The first four seasons were funny as hell. The fifth season you knew it was over because Martin was always drowsy red-eyed all the time, but the fifth season had bright spots "the steakout", "cookoo clock", and "mental hospital" in which other shows hated off of "Steve Harvey" "Jamie Foxx". Why writers copy off a rerun of a show are you that bad of a writer. Stop Hating on this show.
The last 2 seasons it seemed Martin wasn't even trying anymore. The show was funny because of his peripheral characters, and once they stopped coming into the script, and the show went for more traditional laughs, is when the show started to suck.
MARTIN was a pretty funny show that survived several shark jumps. The first jump occurred when Martin lost his job at the radio station. This job was a great premise for a lot of funny situations and Lawrence was totally believable as a disc jockey. The second jump was when Martin finally married Gina. One of the main reasons we loved MARTIN was wondering what was going to be the next obstacle in the on again off again relationship between Martin and Gina. We were amused by Martin's consistent avoidance of commitment and it made for some of the show's richest material. Once they married, story possibilities were brutally chopped in half. The third jump was when Tisha Campbell left the show. Martin and Gina had married and considering the reason that Ms. Campbell left the show, it would have been a classier move to end production at that point. Campbell's exit from the show clouded Martin's reputation and therefore made it difficult for people to watch and enjoy the show IMO. They should have written Gina and Martin off together or have Gina leave Martin and end production.
So hard to see a show that once was hilarious become a half hour of idiotic one-liners, lame insults, and physical "comedy" - that was far, far, from funny. I know that Martin was on drugs, but were all the writers suddenly smoking crack, too?
After reading comments of other fellow voters, I'm completely taken aback. I'm a 28 year old African-American male that absolutely loved the Martin TV show. I love the criticism that the show was too silly. Not unlike Seinfeld, the Simpsons, or Friends right? Or the haters, hating on Tisha Campbell, Duane Martin, Martin Lawrence, and everyone else on the show. Of course jealousy incurs when your attractive wife is having to play intimate w/ another man. But unfortunately it was true that Martin obviously had some problems (mental, emotional, etc.) So the harassment suit does seem that farfetched now does it? It was great 90's comedy. I would say it is probably in the top ten of comedies in that decade. The chemistry was just right. I have loved this show to have run for about 6 seasons in total, where Martin and Gina finally get married in the final episode. Imagine a My Wife and Kids type of show w/ the Gina and Martin characters.
This show jumped the shark when it cast Tisha Campbell as the love interest for Martin. She was soooo corny and lame. Martin is hilarious and he needs someone that can feed off of his comedic brilliance like Pam. Imagine how far the show could have went watching him and Pam go at it. Although the show was cancelled, I give mad props to Martin for doing what so many African American actors don't do too often....STAY TRUE TO THEMSELVES!!!! P.S. Jerome was as funny as drinking red kool aid on the toilet naked!! Peace Out Y'all!!!
This show never jumped the shark. I don't care what none of the other people say. I read a lot of the other comments and I think a lot of it was stupid. You cannot judge Martin for what went on during that time. You weren't there so you can't be for sure of what happened. For those of you who said that Martin wasn't funny, you have got to be crazy!!! Martin is one of the funniest comedians around. Let's see you do something if you think you can do better. It ain't easy to get up in front of a large audience and do some of your best work. And for those of you who said that you didn't get no laughs out of the show, WHY DID YOU WATCH IT THEN? That wasn't very smart on your part. Some of the stuff yall said was just stupid. Martin had to be some kind of funny and had some kind of talent. How else did he stay on for so long? And he's still going. Yes, Gina did mess up a lot of things for the show but she was a good actress and she deserve some credit. Pam, Tommy, Cole, all of Martin's side characters, etc. were vey funny also. I think the show was fine just how it was and I don't think no changes should have been made. HATERS step back. This was one of the best shows ever!!! All of the characters were funny and doing their job. This show never "Jumped the Shark."
What the hell was Martin thinking? I was offended by this "very stereotypical" black woman he plays called Shinaynay. Not all black women wear weave, have super long fingernails, and have names like that. Martin was trying to make her funny but it just looked stupid and goofy.
Martin taking over the show is when it turned turned to crap. He single handedly forced Garret Morris off of the show, changed his characters job and started writing more of his material. Simply ********.
This show never jumped the shark MARTIN is the funniest sitcom ever hands-down. It was original, spontaneous and funny as hell. For those of you that don't like Martin, you can talk to the hand or get the steppin.
This show jumped in season 5. Most of the plots in this season were dumb. I mean Cole getting his own place, Martin and Gina buying a haunted house, a damn cuckoo clock that Martin and the gang thought worth 10,000$! Bull****! Martin was great in seasons 1-4 but in season 5 it was as Martin Lawrence would himself might admit was straight up whack! Peace!
This show is probably one of the funniest shows in history. Sure, for those of you who don't like it, you have no real sense of humor. This show is more slapstick comedy than witty humor so if you haven't had the experiences of the characters on the show and can't relate to them, then of course you're not going to think the show is funny. Personally, I can watch this show over and over again and it still makes me laugh.
