I miss the term "Jump The Shark", boned doesn't even sound right.

I agree with Torgo on this subject.

"Boned" is best left to boneheads.

As much as I despise the term "Jump the Shark", it's much better than this stupid "Bone the Fish."

And yet, it seems to have taken over almost ALL the boards here with such drivel....

Green Acres boned the fish, when they tried to pass off actress Fran Ryan as Mrs. Ziffel, after Barbara Pepper died. They should have just dropped the character!

When Jay Sommers turned his back on the show halfway into its last season to develop those awful pilots.

When the show changed direction. At first, Oliver was the nutty character, with sensible wife Lisa. Then for some reason, they switched personalities.

The show got better every season in my opinion. It took a number of episodes before it found its style. I much prefer the later Lisa to the more sensible Lisa of the earlier episodes.

I loved Barbara Pepper! She was great in the role of a farmers wife! Fran Ryan was OK, but she couldn't take Barbara's place. Nobody could play Doris Ziffel the way Barbara could. Maybe they should have added Fran, but as another character , like Fred's sister. Back than death wasn't really addressed on TV shows. Like on Petticoat Junction, Kate was "out of town" when the actress Bea B. passed away. They could have had Doris be away from Hooterville for some reason and Fred's sister came to stay to help with the farm and Arnold.

Barbara Pepper and Lucille Ball were very good friends. I'm sure you caught her in some of the episodes of I Love Lucy! Very funny lady!!!

Mary McCarty would have made a great replacement for Barbara. It's a shame that never occurred to Eddie Albert, who had worked with Mary on Broadway. Ah well, who knows if she would have been available/interested anyway.

I don't think Green Acres ever jumped the bone, or fished the shark, or whatever. IMO once it hit its high point (early third season) the quality never slipped, and in fact I prefer the later seasons to the earlier ones. It actually did a reverse shark-jump. Although I love all the seasons, the first two years seemed to me to follow the stereotypical "silly '60s sitcom" type of show. There were moments of brilliance, but these would become more pronounced as the seasons wore on. The difference was I think the writers, actors, etc. were taking the show too seriously at the start, and not letting the subtle surrealism have a chance to show through. At some point the writing got much sharper and allowed for more outrageous gags and their unique brand of witty verbal humor. The real source of humor in the show was Oliver reacting to the oddballs around him (Lisa included) and this was not fully developed in its early episodes.

For the record I thought the last two episodes were pretty bad, but they were so out of touch with the show I generally don't even consider them official episodes.
