i really don't understand how this actually made it on the air, surely there was some informercial or test pattern that would've been more entertaining and gotten better ratings than this.

Coming from someone who was unemployed for over 2 years and was passed over for numerous jobs in that time span - WHO would want to watch a show like this??? What's the demographic here???
