The King of Queens is one of my all time favorite comedies. I don't agree with its placement on that list, nor do I agree with the placement of Everybody Loves Raymond and Married with Children, even though I'm not a fan of either of them.

I get really tired of such stereotypical shows too. But there are some shows out there that are much better examples for men- "Family Ties", "Family Matters", "Growing Pains", "Full House" and others come to mind- certainly "The Andy Griffith Show".

Well, I agree with the premise that there have simply been WAY too many tv shows that were about immature men and inept, clueless fathers. But, I don't think it happened because that's people think that is the way men really behave. I think it simply happened because enough people like laughing at juvenile humor to make shows like that profitable for decades. Other stereotypes that were vastly overworked were sit coms about ditzy women (and more recently, sit coms about horny women who can't find a suitable mate), sitcoms about a sloppy person and a neat person trying to get along and sitcoms about someone trying to hide a relationship with a supernatural or extra-terrestrial being (or a talking horse or car).
In each of the above categories, some of the shows were funny, some were horrible. But the ones that were popular, were not popular because people actually believed they represented reality, but because of funny jokes, good writing or a talented and/or attractive cast. Saying that Two and Half Men is popular because people think that's how men really behave is like saying Bewitched was popular because people believed in a race of immortal sorcerers. Having said this in defense of their existence, I will state for the record that I myself have never been a fan of any of the usual shows you think of when you talk about these shows about men who are jerks (except I do like The Honeymooners). And I think using a stereotype of any sort to base a television show on is laziness on the part of the production team. But I don't single this particular stereotype out as being in some way worse than the others. Just my 2 cents. To add a few additions the list of tv shows which were centered on decent, hard working men who treated their wives/girlfriends with respect and/or took good care of their family -- The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Cosby Show, Father Knows Best, My Three Sons, and more recently - Dharma and Greg |

I also don't understand why the writer of that article seems to hate multi-camera sitcoms with a laugh-track. Talk about prejudices.

NEVER FORGET: MANCESSION 2011
(that was the year the networks decided to all premiere a bunch of shows about how hard it is to be a man in a WOMANS WORLD! and it was the worst thing ever) |
