On Home Improvement, Tim Taylor spent most of the episode basking in his manly perspective, then got confused, and THEN learned something about where someone else was coming from. He saw something one way in the beginning, but never really failed to put himself in another person's shoes by the end (with the help of Wilson). It gave a sweetness to the show that is lacking on Last Man Standing.

^^^ To me, his chats with Wilson were one of the best things about the show.

A sitcom is supposed about situational humor, not about pushing political agendas. If they pulled back the reigns and just stuck to that it'd be great. It's also one of the reasons why people felt Home Improvement was weak in Season 7/mostly 8 because it started going into things such as drug abuse, counter-culture (their goth son), etc. Not saying these are always bad subjects to address but the after-school special and general preachiness is a quick way to kill a good show.
