Default What the Hell Happened to Kim Basinger?

http://lebeauleblog.com/2012/02/05/w...-kim-basinger/

Quote:
She’s been a Bond girl, Batman’s girlfriend and a corpse in a Tom Petty video. Most recently, she played Zac Effron’s mom. What the hell happened? The easy answer is that Kim Basinger was a sex symbol who got old. But the story of Basinger’s career is far more interesting than the easy answer would lead you to believe.

Like a lot of the actresses I have profiled so far, Basinger got her start as a model. She then transitioned on to TV shows like Starskey and Hutch and Charlie’s Angels. Following that, she broke into films with films like Hard Country and Mother Lode.

I never found her very attractive.

She looked like a plain Jane in the same shot with Jackie.

I didn't know Kim Basinger was on some episodes of Charlie's Angels. Mood Ring, you can't be serious that you don't think she's attractive hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Kim is hot and always has been. She's aged very well and she's 61. I've seen several of her movies like No Mercy, Final Analysis, The Getaway, Nadine, The Door In The Floor, The Burning Plain, Blind Date, While She Was Out, Cellular. I can't believe she wasted her time being in Grudge Match with Sylvester Stallone and Robert Deniro LOL.

I didn't say she wasn't attractive, she just does not appeal to me. Jackie, Cheryl and Kate were much more attractive to me. It's a matter of personal taste.

I don't normally have a thing for blondes but Kim was hot in Batman '89, I think maybe her range was limited and pretty much peetered out after marrying Alec Baldwin with only a slight bump with L.A. Confidential.

Then of course there's the harsh reality in Hollywood that women past 40 are no longer given meaty roles unless you're a Meryl Streep.

Or Helen Mirren... who is now 69.

Mood Ring, the women on Charlie's Angels weren't hotter than Kim. Get real LOL. Mace Dolex, i could care less that Kim Basinger hasn't gotten a lot of roles when she got older. She still does independent movies that are straight to video because i've seen a couple of them like The Burning Plain with Charlize Theron(i want her so bad)and Jennifer Lawrence. She has a new movie now with Mickey Rourke, Vivica Fox, reggae music artist Akon and rapper/reggae artist Wyclef of The Fugees. I forgot the name of the movie. She's done 2 other movies with Mickey Rourke which were 9 1/2 Weeks and The Informers. I still wanna see 9 1/2 Weeks. Kim was really hot in that from the previews i saw. I forgot she was rapper Eminem's mom in 8 Mile.

With Kim Basinger and why were career went downhill post-Oscar win, I think that:
1) She waited too long to capitalize off of the momentum of her win (by not having another film released for another three years) and released too poorly received movies (Bless the Child and I Dreamed of Africa). This probably gave off the perception that maybe she “never had it” or was passed her peak as a headliner in major motion pictures. Hell, even Cellular, which is (to the best of my knowledge) the last majorly released movie w/ Kim Basinger as the first billed star is arguably, kind of a demeaning role as she spends most of the movie held hostages in a basement waiting for Chris Evans (AKA Captain America) to save her. Kim should’ve stopped playing crying, victimized damsels-in-distress after she did Batman.

2) Kim arguably, never really had the greatest range for an actress. It perhaps makes it hard for her to reinvent herself as a character actress once it became apparent that her leading lady days were over. I guess my main point is that unless your say, Meryl Streep or Helen Mirren, women over the age of 60 don’t seem to be offered a lot of predominate roles in major motion pictures these days. This is what somebody said about Heather Graham which I think also holds true for Kim Basinger:
Quote:
Eventually, I think she crossed a point where it was perceived that Graham had little more to offer than her looks. And as she approached middle age, the value of her looks wasn’t what it once was.

Now don’t get me wrong. Graham is still stunningly beautiful. I get why she was cast in that Lifetime adaptation of Flowers in the Attic for example. But being an incredibly beautiful middle aged woman won’t get you lead roles in movies. Those go to incredibly beautiful 20 year olds for the most part.
3) As much as I hate to say this, Kim Basinger (despite being one of the world’s most beautiful women) is kind of flake. This may have reflected her poor judgement at the height of her career. I also think that it’s safe to suggest that the fall out from her split from Alec Baldwin (culminating in the infamous voice mail towards their daughter, Ireland) wrecked havoc w/ the Kim needing or trying to keep her career focused and on track.

4) Kim likely has a horrible PR team behind her. Again, this goes back to her not going faster w/ capitalizing off of her Oscar win. And then she proceeds to release a bunch of movies that nobody save for really die hard fans or indie movie observers have heard of. And the major movies that she actually did appear in, it seems like on the surface, (especially during the promotions) she isn’t a prominent character. Maybe Kim prefers doing smaller movies after having her blockbuster fill w/ Batman. I’ve read (and recently posted here) that Kim often turns down role if it meant having to be too far away from her daughter.

Default Kim is sometimes unbearable on Twitter

The thing that I’ve noticed based on Kim’s Twitter account, is that she seems fully 100% content on promoting animal welfare. I hate to single her out for something like that because she isn’t the only celebrity to use social media to promote causes that are personal to them. But it seems like, if I want to read stuff like that all the time, I’ll go to PETA’s Twitter account. Maybe my point, is that I wish that Kim would talk about stuff that she’s doing besides that. It just feels extremely pretentious if you ask me.

It seems like Kim just makes a movie and doesn’t put forth enough of a personal effort to promote it or make everybody know that she’s in it. If the movie is successful and it gains herself accolades, then its an added bonus. This is part of the reason why I think her career cooled off after her Oscar win, because she didn’t do a better enough of a job to keep herself and her name relevant (outside of her personal issues w/ Alec Baldwin).

The only non-animal related stuff that I’ve come across on her Twitter, is when she said something about David Letterman in lieu of his retirement.

https://twitter.com/kimbasinger

What doesn’t help is that Kim has to align herself (of all of the animal welfare causes) w/ those wack-jobs at PETA (as I’ve previously mentioned):
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...Disco/RealLife

Quote:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was once the premier animal rights organization in the United States. In the early-mid 2000s they gained acclaim for their chilling exposes into industrial farming, most notably the documentary “Kentucky Fried Cruelty” which described the abuses faced by animals raised for their meat. Teen activists rallied behind them and celebrities such as Pamela Anderson endorsed them… until two bombshells were dropped near the end of the decade. The first was their turn toward increasingly radical and nonsensical campaigns, the two most infamous of which were a petition to rename “fish” to “sea kittens” and a campaign against Pokémon and Super Mario Bros.. The second, and most important, was the revelation that they euthanize the vast majority of the animals sent to their shelters, apparently due to feeling that domestication is a Fate Worse Than Death for animals and that they were mercy killing them. PETA euthanized about 90% of the animals they rescued (compared to the ASPCA only putting down about 10%), they had large capacity walk-in refrigerators that rivaled restaurants to store the animals prior to disposal, and they were caught because the people dumping the bodies at one shelter decided to use a nearby dumpster instead of an approved disposal method. Now, most animal rights and environmental activists view them as a joke punchline at best, and morally bankrupt at worst.

Funny, you should mention her. Here's a pic of Helen Mirren in 1969.

Does Kim Basinger's recent career mirror Michelle Pfeiffer's (or vice versa)? Please note, that I'm not trying to compare which one of Michael Keaton's Batman leading ladies is overall, a better actress.

*Both Kim and Michelle never really headlined a major blockbuster. The closest Michelle ever got (where she headlined a successful movie based on her name alone) was Dangerous Minds.

*Both Kim and Michelle in recent years has seemed to be relegated to supporting roles/ensemble pieces (more than often w/ people whom they’ve worked before). Or if they do appear in movies in which they’re the main attraction, they’re not widely distributed.

*Both Kim and Michelle arguably made poor choices (e.g. Kim’s post-Batman pre-LA Confidential choices/post-LA Confidential choices and Michelle’s “Oprah’s Book Club” period post-What Lies Beneath) that didn’t capitalize off of their greatest successes.

http://lebeauleblog.com/2011/10/07/w...comment-213284

*Both Kim and Michelle seem to take long periods in-between projects. More to the point, both of them (as highlighted in the comments above regarding Michelle at least) often come across as aloof, cold and stand-offish in regards to having to promote their stuff.

Default Kim Basinger on Good Kissing, Her Academy Awards Outburst, and Conversations with God

http://lebeauleblog.com/2016/02/07/k...ions-with-god/

Quote:
Twenty-five years ago, Kim Basinger was trying to sell her new movie, The Marrying Man. She says as much in this interview with Movieline Magazine. While Basinger refuses to discuss a number of topics, she opens up about quite a few things that might surprise you. Basinger doesn’t hesitate to criticize Hollywood which to hear her tell it sounds like one bad experience after another. She also talks about her grand plans for the town of Braselton (which she bought and then dumped five years later at a huge personal loss) and an outburst at the Oscars in which she shamed Hollywood for not nominated Do the Right Thing for Best Picture.
Quote:
LG: Didn’t you also turn down “Charlie’s Angels”?

KB: I could have been the Angels’ little sister. But it was a mess. I did one segment-“Angels in Chains”-and it became a classic “Charlie’s Angels.” But I just knew I wanted to do film and I wanted to sing. Real simple.

Default Single biggest mistake that Kim made during her career?

*Buying the town of Braselton, Georgia

*Her alleged on-set diva antics on The Marrying Man as well as helping ruining Ralph Bakshi's Cool World buy suggesting that it be more of a "kids movie"

*Hooking up w/ Alec Baldwin

*The Boxing Helena mess

*Going on a three year hiatus from movies soon after winning her Oscar

*Any one of her starring vehicles that didn't connect w/ audiences/critics (i.e. The Marrying Man, Cool World, Final Analysis, The Real McCoy, The Getaway, I Dreamed of Africa, and Bless the Child)

*Turning down roles that turned out to be huge hits like Speed (she was offered Sandra Bullock's role)
