Default Why can't MTV quit its reality TV exploitation?

http://www.buzzfeed.com/natashavc/wh...y-exploitation

From "Buckwild" to "Teen Mom," MTV's reality shows have become increasingly exploitative.

Pretty much every time I scroll through its a movie or Ridiculousness. But now, MTV is just another channel among hundreds. It does nothing to stand out or be different. It's safe, homogenized, inoffensive programming that's easy to digest and doesn't challenge anyone to think too hard. It does nothing to capture today's youth and their ideals, unlike what it was in its heyday. I

The funny thing is that I really think that MTV really wants to keep that teen/early 20s audience. So much so that they alienate viewers in the mid/late 20s and thirties, just because it's micro-focused on the teen/early 20s demo.

Oh No

Because reality show make money! When a station gets corporate... it's too late to save it!

MTV should call themselves NMTV! No Music Television!

I Don't Want My MTV!

I think it was on this site where it was mentioned that Viacom are laying off or firing employees. I'm sorry I don't feel bad for them . That might sound mean but they brought this upon themselves.

This is the best summary/analysis of how absolutely wrong-headed and out of touch MTV is these days that I've come across in quite a while:
Quote:
It shouldn't be a 'youth' channel IMO, it should be a 'music' channel. And no, I don't mean they should drop everything and go back to music videos, that ship sailed a long time ago. I mean it should be about the music scene, reporting on upcoming releases and tours, giving reviews, putting the spotlight on some new unknown groups, getting talk shows where musicians are interviewed and can give live performances, and showing concerts on occasion.

They're fighting a losing war trying to keep a teenage audience that really doesn't care about MTV or have cable to watch it. Their reality shows that have kept them strong for 20 years are failing them now, though a few keep a steady audience. Their move into scripted dramas has pretty much failed, and I really wonder if they think the Snapchat strategy is going to revive their channel. Trying to keep MTV as the 'youth' channel is increasingly looking like a lost cause with a generation that's left cable TV behind and moved onto the Internet, and most adults aren't very interested in shows like Catfish and 16 & Pregnant, so MTV needs a new direction and a new audience if they want a future.

MTV point blank, has almost 40 years in, gone from revolutionary to just another random, blended together cable channel. It's utterly amazing that MTV thinks it can stay afloat (and by sheer magnitude, does) with little else than Ridiculousness, Teen Mom, and Catfish running nonstop. And then, you can add reruns of Friends, which isn't on enough channels already. But, they pretty much dug their own proverbial grave with their bad short-cuts.

Hello all,

I'm late for any MTV anniversaries, but I just wrote a web article with some trivia on a few of the artists whose videos were played when MTV made its cablecast debut on August 1, 1981. Yes, I too, remember the days when they did play music videos

Because for reasons I'll never comprehend most people seem to like exploitative garbage. I think it's sickening.

You can easily argue that MTV's biggest fundamental problem nowadays is that they solely exist to attract the teen audience. They can’t just show music videos like from back in the day because teens watch them online, their Awards Shows are more than likely struggling because teens watch the performances online. And they can’t really do music news as teens get that way more up to date online. Therefore, the only thing they have left is to completely restructure MTV from the ground up and go after an older audience.

But isn't too much now? I mean we can do everything online. I mean I guess that's ok but when is enough enough. We can watch videos online. That's very true but there is something traditional about watching videos, movies, sports etc. on television.

I think the music video could work now if you surround it with different shows. You can bring shows back like Beavis and Butthead and Daria with new episodes, Ridiculousness, Hip Hop Squares, Catfish, Teen Mom and music videos.
