Jay Leno's Contract Extended Past 2014, NBC Chairman Announces

According to several in attendance at the annual Television Critics Association 2013 winter press tour on Sunday, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt has confirmed that Jay Leno's "Tonight Show" contract has been extended beyond its original expiration date of 2014.

TV critic Jim Halterman first tweeted:

"Leno's contract just extended. No real talks about any succession plan when he does step down. They also love Carson Daly's show. #tca13"

Leno has been hosting "The Tonight Show" since 1992, except for a brief period in 2009-10 when Conan O'Brien hosted the program and Leno was given a low-rated prime time talk show.

NBC's decision to reinstall Leno in favor of O'Brien was widely seen as a PR disaster.

See, I heard otherwise. I saw Greenblatt quoted saying his contract had recently been extended (referring to his stay through 2014). Guess only time will tell.

I believe NBC extended it "through 2014", just like Chelsea Handlers for E!.

I've heard numerous times Chelsea Handler is being groomed for a spot on NBC late night, so in 2015, I think we could see this:

1135 - The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon
1235 - Late Night with Chelsea Handler
135 - Last Call with Carson Daly

This time, Leno is said to be perfectly content with his exit. To which Don Ohlmeyer, NBC's West Coast boss in the '90s, says: "Oh, bullsh*t. I'm sure Jay says that to everybody who asks him, but for the Jay that I know, his heart has to be breaking about this."
