Expand the NFL playoffs from 12 to 16 teams???????????

Why the f*ck does this a$$hole want to have half of the league in the playoffs? If this happens i don't think I can watch the NFL anymore

I like it honestly.

If I had it my way you'd have the 8th seed play the 1st and the 7th play the 2nd, etc like in the NHL.

I hate the bye week and would love to get rid of it. In hockey they have 16 teams make the playoffs and they only have 30 teams.

Another week of playoffs to me is a heck of a lot better than going from 16 regular season games to 18.

Roger Godell is an idiot. We don't need teams with losing records in the playoffs. The regular season should mean something. If you have the best records, you deserve a bye.

Commissioners, these men who often come from prestigious schools and backgrounds as lawyers, are smart. No one will deny that. But the decisions they make at times are baffling and it seems to stretch to every sport.

There is plenty of competition in the “Worst Commissioner in Sports” category. David Stern renewed his campaign with the cancellation of the Chris Paul trade to Los Angeles last year. He routinely tries to keep himself fresh in the minds of fans and media by instituting some ludicrous rule or regulation.

Gary Bettman needs no introduction. The man in charge for the third work stoppage in his nearly 20 year tenure should automatically be the worst Commissioner in sports, right? You can blame him for the over-expansion in hockey; Atlanta didn’t need another team, Florida doesn’t need any teams, and there should be 26 teams MAX. But he has led the NHL to a resurgence since the 2004/05 season was lost to a labor dispute. His critics complain about the lack of an ESPN deal but the facts are that ESPN wasn’t willing to pay anything significant for hockey and Bettman got them a deal with NBC that paid them handsomely AND made them the focal point of the revamped NBC Sports Network. And you can’t blame Bettman for the disputes. He’s a highly paid puppet for the Board of Governors. They dictate these lockouts and make Bettman dance their dance and sing their song for the public.

Criticizing Bud Selig is a little hard when he added an extra Wild Card playoff spot, creating exciting races down the stretch run of the regular season. Not to mention the fact that the MLB and MLBPA nipped any potential labor dispute in the bud by getting a deal done well before the expiration of their CBA (hinty hint hint, NHL). He even dealt with the steroid issue by handing out 50 game suspensions for first-time violators.

No, the title of “Worst Commissioner in Sports” officially goes to Roger Goodell.

Where to start? First, there’s the concussion “epidemic”, which Deadspin reported isn’t really the result of huge violent collisions but rather a series of smaller violent collisions. Let’s face facts on this one: Goodell is only pretending to publicly care about this issue because of the flood of concussion-related lawsuits that are staring him in the fact. With each former player’s death, Goodell knows that it will not only be more publicity for the concussion issue but it could be another lawsuit his league will have to face.

So for all of Goodell’s stances on caring about player safety, what has the great commissioner done to alleviate the issue? Well, for starters, he added a Thursday night game every week. What does that do to help the issue of head injuries? Not a damn thing! It’s worse because teams playing on Thursday night’s often don’t have as much time to recuperate between games which puts players at risk for injury. Football players need to rest.

Not according to Goodell, they don’t. He wants to bump the number of games up to 18 as well but he totally cares about public safety, guys!

Goodell has also tried to put a stop to helmet-to-helmet hits and hits to defenseless receivers. Which sounds great in principle but what’s really happening is that a defender launches himself at a trajectory which would normally lead to a shot to the chest or ribs but ends up being a headshot because the offensive player is falling to the ground. Or, even worse, is when a clean hit is delivered with the shoulder yet is flagged anyway. Brian Billick said what we were all thinking after an egregious flag a few weeks ago: “I guess they’re just supposed to let him catch it.” The league can’t even agree on what to call as seen in the suspended-nope-just-fined Ed Reed saga.

Yesterday came the clincher. The coup-de-gras Goodell needed to take the championship home: Paul Tagliabue, former Commissioner brought in to review the Bountygate case after a year of lawsuits and appeals, ruled that the suspensions levied upon former and current Saints players be repealed.

It was bad enough that this saga had continued as long as it had, with the league refusing to provide evidence amid requests from the suspended players. Jonathan Vilma was so vehement in professing his innocence that he filed a defamation of character lawsuit against Goodell and says he has no plans to throw that out even after his suspension was lifted.

That’s how thoroughly this was botched. Goodell and his office proclaimed to have a smoking gun when this all broke, never brought it out, screwed it up so badly that his former boss had to come in and clean up his mess. And this is the most popular sport in the country! A multi-billion-dollar company being run by a man who can’t do his job without his former boss intervening for the best.

Fortunately for Roger, the NFL will keep on chugging along despite him. But one has to wonder how much longer the NFL can employ the worst commissioner in sports for much longer before it starts to hinder their success.
