Sherwood Schwartz picked the name Gilligan from a phone book.

Roz Doyle was one of the producers of Wings. That's probably where the Frasier character came from, some of the same writers and several of the Cheers cast crossed over to Wings.

And the name "S.S. Minnow" was named after former FCC Chairman Newton N. Minow, although not with that much fondness.

Somehow, I keep thinking that Dan Schneider might've named Carly Shay after Daniel Shays. There are other characters that come to mind, but some I'm not ready to bring up, and others I can't think of at the moment.
