TV Abby Elliott Leaving "SNL"

Abby Elliott Not Returning to "SNL"
The Huffington Post | by Ross Luippold
08/15/2012

Abby Elliott will not return to "SNL" next season, the actress tells comedy news blog Splitsider.

She will depart after four seasons on the show. While Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig were expected to exit the show, the news that Elliott may not come back was not widely reported.

Calls to NBC, which generally does not comment on "SNL" casting decisions until the start of the season, were not returned.

Elliott was known mostly for her impressions, which included Angelina Jolie, Khloe Kardashian, Rachel Maddow, Anna Faris and Rosie Pope.

With the departure of Elliott and Wiig, Nasim Pedrad is the only female cast member. Featured players Vanessa Bayer and Kate McKinnon could be promoted to full members of the cast, but this will not be revealed until the beginning of the season.

Now that three cast members have left, it's likely that "SNL" will add a few more comics to its ranks for the next season. Currently, it's unconfirmed whether Jason Sudeikis will return to the cast.

The 38th season of "SNL" is set to premiere September 15.

Default Abby Elliott's "SNL" mystery: Was she dumped or did she quit?

http://weblogs.variety.com/on_the_ai...y-elliott.html

As Andrew Wallenstein notes, "it's hard to recall an example of an 'SNL' cast member who displayed as much talent as she did on the show yet remained woefully underused. Her parting is all the more confusing considering (Kristen) Wiig's departure may have provided just the opportunity for her to finally make good on her potential."

The problem for all SNL actresses who appeared in the last seven years or so is primarily one thing: Kristen Wiig. I know she has legions of fans, and she's undoubtedly talented, but she was vastly overused on that show, so much so that all other actresses were robbed of screen time. Elliot was very effective in the few morsels they'd toss to her...great as Zooey Deschanel, Angelina Jolie, and the Kardashian sister. It's a pity she wasn't used more.

Here's to bigger and better things for Abby!

And this made it hard for me to get to know all the actresses, except Kirstin, by name. I love Kirstin, but its true they should have utilitzed the other ladies, more.

She just never really made much of an impact, and honestly she was given plenty of chances, more than previously cast aside female cast members like Casey Wilson (who obviously was way more talented than her SNL time suggeste) and Michelea Watkins. She was supposed to be leaving to star in a pilot anyway, but it fell through...I guess she just decided to leave anyway.

I don't see how they overused Gilda. She got a similar amount of airtime as Jane and Laraine.

Sucks that Abby is leaving. I guess that means Vanessa will be promoted as a regular.

Besides the Zooey thing, the Kardashians, Angelina Jolie and a couple other impersonations, I don't see where Abby received many chances. And the Kardashian thing was part of a group.

As to Gilda, I don't think she was overused, because she was a much stronger sketch comic than Lorraine or Jane (and her characters were likeable), but I really think she did get more screen time than they did.

Larraine Newman was the under used actress from the original cast. I think Jane Curtain had as much screen time as Gilda.
