Correct me if I'm wrong, it seemed like (especially when the influence and/or impact of TGIF on ABC started to dry up) up until recently, the networks are aiming more for either shows concerning tight packs of typically adult friends, office based shows, or even the idea of dragging out a relatively major star (e.g. Bette Midler, John Goodman, Geena Davis, Michael Richards, Jason Alexander, etc.) to headline:
ABC: *My Wife & Kids *According to Jim Fox: *The Bernie Mac Show *Grounded for Life *The Simpsons *Malcolm In the Middle *Family Guy (well before it apparently got canceled) NBC: *None as of right now unless you want to count recently canceled shows like Daddio and the alleged Malcolm... rip-off called Tucker. CBS: *I guess stuff like Everybody Loves Raymond and Yes! Dear can in a way, be considered to be family centric. I only say this because of the presumably lack of sigificant kid interplay. UPN: *The Hughleys (of course, a refugee from ABC) *The Parkers *One On One *Smackdown (just kidding) WB: *Reba *Raising Dad *Maybe it's Me |

There most certainly is a trend going on here.
Family shows are making a comeback. Of course, these shifts in programming come in waves, so in a few years, after the Family Show has played out, we'll see more ensemble comedys set in offices or more celebs with shows built around whatever talent they think they have. I think this trend has a lot to do with the networks copying each other than anything else. FOX has some success with "Malcom" so every Network is developing single camera no laugh track shows (NBC already has Scrubs). I hope some of these shows will be around for a while. The Family Sitcom is a Television staple, and it's refreshing when a show come along and adds a different spin to a genre that has been done so many times. |
