Default How MTV let go of Gen X to remake itself for the millennial generation

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment...,2994040.story

By 2008, the network became complacent with shows like "The Hills" and "My Super Sweet 16." Now it is targeting the millennial generation with shows like "Awkward" and "Teen Mom."

the quality of MTV went down over the years, due in part to the type of music that is dominating the charts. and with reality shows now saturating the station, i'm not surprised its continuing the way it is.

when i want to watch music vids, i go on youtube instead.

Yeah, videos are now an Internet thing. But it still doesn't excuse MTV from creating and airing so many crappy reality shows and making celebrities out of the people on them.

very true. the m in MTV has to stand for something else other than 'music' surely.

Beavis & Butt-head are coming back in four days. That's really the only thing that I'm looking forward to in regards to MTV these days.

Beavis and Butthead returning should be a sign for the "M" to stand for "Moron", just in honor of our favorite morons.

I watched The Hills and watch The Real World and will watch Beavis and Butthead. Bottom line, they can have reality shows, thats fine. The problem is thats all they care about. If your going to show reality shows, be fair and acually show, you know, music videos. I mean whats wrong with showing music videos from 3pm to 7pm everyday. They show That 70s Show instead? That shows on like 3 different channels already.

MTV hasn't been good since literally the 1980's, when it was actually a channel that had............MUSIC VIDEOS.

In the original, original 1984 format, MTV was a television/radio station with V-Jays. The only one I remember from back in the day was "Downtown" Julie Brown. But that's what MTV was, and it launched the careers of many acts from that time, people like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Billy Idol, Prince, and bunches of other acts.

I think the problem was, what kind of music where they to play? I remember the shows "Headbangers Ball" and "Yo! MTV" which served different demographics. So, I think they decided to get into TV shows and whatnot.

I haven't watched an MTV show in many years. I did watch a few episodes of "Hard Times with RJ Berger" or something similar, a supposedly teen comedy that was not funny and just full of stereotypes, horny kids, the geek, whatever, it was garbage and I stopped watching after 10 minutes or so.

Oh well, Beavis and Butthead, the ONLY good thing to come out of MTV in the last 20 years is back. Well it will be until some trailer trash moron sues them again, because their kid burned the house down because Beavis yelled "Fire, Fire!

The sad thing is that MTV is still in existence and is not out of business because of that lawsuit from back then. And corporate owner Viacom (you know, the company that RUINED the Nashville Network!) tolerates that, what a joke!

^^ Is there any station Viacom has not ruined? Remember they own TVLand too.It seems half of Pay tv channels are owned by those crooks. And alot of other channels just copied what Viacom did and that's why most of Pay TV has become just a bunch of copycat channels with little variety, low common denominator programming etc. and whose main purpose is of course to show zillions of commercials.Look at what happenned to AMC being one example of many.

I think the last time I actually watched an entire program on MTV was about 10-11 years ago when they had WWF Sunday Night Heat. Celebrity Death Match also wasn't that bad. Of course, back then I think they even had music on past the early morning hours.

I am 40 and watched MTV probably until mid 90's. Loved the videos, loved the shows like Remote Control and Beavis and Butthead (excited they are coming back). However, then it became terrible with all the stupid reality shows and many to me glorify terrible behavior like Teen Mom (this show is highly offensive to me). I do agree that part of it is the music changing because back when MTV went on air they played music I liked (mostly New Wave and Classic Rock). When it went to awful music it made it less likely I would watch though I still liked many of the shows. However, reality tv on MTV is disgusting.
