Default CW looking into a return to sitcoms

http://www.deadline.com/2011/08/tca-...s-superheroes/

New CW boss Mark Pedowitz says the network will return to comedies "very slowly, very smartly — baby steps, selectively." The CW is also seeking a "good close-ended show that has a CW feel to it."

Seems like The CW is headed in the right direction. Mark realizes there is a problem during midseason and summer and is trying to fix those problems. There are only so many things he can do to fix the mess Dawn left behind.

Great idea! TV is seriously lacking in realistic teen/young adult oriented comedies.

TV '18 to Life'

I am surprised that Mr. Mark Pedowitz didn't exercise his option to air the remaining unaired episodes of '18 to Life', The CW's pickup from the CBC last summer.

Although it didn't do huge numbers, it would have made a much better programming move than encores of 'Plain Jane' or 'Shedding for the Wedding' in setting up viewers of The CW for watching comedies.

If I were Mr. Pedowitz, I'd look to do a comedy that makes fun of the whole Harry Potter craze. Something in the vein of the BBC's brilliantly funny 'Young Dracula', but with an American suburban slant.

Mr. Pedowitz has another opportunity to shine in CW Daytime, by securing second-run broadcast rights for Prospect Park's 'One Life to Live', which I think is ABC's most youth-slanted soaper. With 'The Tyra Show' going off the air in September, Mr. Pedowitz could make a deal with Miss Anges Nixon for a fall batch of re-edited episodes from the last decade that sets up some of the more youth-oriented storylines for viewers of The CW so that when the encore window on new episodes begins in January 2012, viewers of The CW will be up to speed.

Its a good idea to try to get soap operas on the CW. A main problem I have is that, the breaks they take. For ex. One Tree Hill may have an episode in mid November and not return until late January!! I think thats way too long. Or how about the time a few yrs. ago when One Tree Hill went on hiatus I guess and they debuted a new show, went with the show for an entire run which was I guess 13 episodes or whatever and then One Tree Hill came back on and finished the season.

CW actually needs to spend some money and effectively market and promote the network. UPN at one point was getting 4 to 5 million weekly viewers for select shows. WB was doing 3 to 4 million. These 2.1-3.2 weekly numbers are terrible and then again the programming is terrible. When it comes to comedies, they had great ones they opted to not pick up at the start such as "What I Like About You" and "Half and Half". The ones they picked up, such as "Everybody Hates Chris", "Girlfriends", "Reba" were great ones but suffered the fate of limited to no marketing and promotion. Reba was the highest rated show for the 06-07 season but still got canceled as Ostroff wanted to shift the focus of the network. EHC was the highest rated for UPN on Thursdays and beat the weak comedies NBC had because UPN promoted it. The show should have been left on Thursday and paired up with Reba or Girlfriends. Don't get me started on the lackluster campaign for "The Game", BET showed them how that was supposed to be done.

I could go on about mistakes made under Ostroff's watch but now the CW needs to get out of this suburban white teen focus and focus more on young adults. If they do that, get some great comedies, a real drama (no more police dramas please), they can rebound.
